POSITION SUMMARY:
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible for delivering essential nursing services to ensure the comfort and health of patients in the Surgical Care Unit. This role involves providing designated nursing care to Medical Surgical patients under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). The LPN plays a vital role in supporting the patient care team with medication administration, patient assessments, dressing changes, and various other nursing duties.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Deliver direct patient care and assist patients with daily living activities, promoting independence where suitable.
- Evaluate patient outcomes and collaborate with other healthcare professionals as necessary to enhance patient care.
- Uphold the hospital's philosophy, policies, and procedures while interacting with patients and their families.
- Consult with registered nurses regarding the educational needs of patients and implement instructional activities alongside therapists and pharmacists.
- Demonstrate procedures and encourage patient participation in their care processes.
- Maintain accurate and confidential patient records, documenting the type of instruction provided and other relevant information.
- Alert the physician on call about any unusual occurrences, changes in patient condition, or issues requiring immediate attention.
- Assess the effectiveness of patient care, adjusting nursing practices as needed in consultation with the registered nurse.
- Provide appropriate patient care in assigned areas, utilizing aseptic techniques.
- Assist physicians during examinations and procedures related to patient care.
- Work under the guidance of the registered nurse to implement infection control measures and identify potential infections.
- Conduct daily inspections of the area to ensure compliance with policies, regulations, and safety standards, addressing any violations promptly.
- Adhere to Tucson Medical Center's organizational and departmental safety, confidentiality, and values policies.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION: Graduate from an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse program or vocational school.
EXPERIENCE: Preferred two (2) years of practical nursing experience.
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION: Current LPN license valid in the state of Arizona and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Additional certifications may be necessary based on departmental needs.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Understanding of nursing practices and procedures for optimal patient care.
- Proficiency in delivering patient care within a hospital environment.
- Adept at reading and interpreting safety guidelines, operational instructions, and procedural manuals.
- Capable of completing routine reports and correspondence effectively.
- Strong listening skills with the ability to accurately interpret instructions and communicate effectively.
- Competent in performing calculations and interpreting data.
- Ability to apply common sense in executing written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions.
- Skilled in addressing problems involving multiple concrete variables in standardized situations.
