Job Overview

The Pathologists' Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting pathologists during post-mortem examinations and surgical pathology procedures. This position involves a variety of responsibilities including organ preparation, dissection, and assisting with intraoperative consultations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitates the education of residents and fellows in surgical pathology techniques, including gross dissection and histologic processing.
  • Assists in the training of pathology residents in frozen section procedures and special techniques, ensuring accurate sampling and selection of lesions.
  • Engages in the performance of autopsy examinations, ensuring proper legal authorization and reviewing relevant clinical data.
  • Participates in post-mortem procedures, obtaining specimens for analysis and performing specialized histological techniques.
  • Conducts frozen section examinations, preparing and processing tissue samples in accordance with established standards.
  • Prepares surgical pathology specimens, ensuring accurate accessioning and submission for histologic evaluation.
  • Coordinates with pathologists to assist in eviscerations and specimen processing for microscopic examination.
  • Documents and photographs significant gross specimens and microscopic slides, serving as a liaison between laboratory staff and physicians.
  • Contributes to quality assurance initiatives within the pathology department, monitoring compliance and recording quality activities.
  • Performs additional related duties as necessary, all of which are considered essential functions of the role.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • A current license to practice as a Pathology Assistant is mandatory, along with any necessary specialized certifications.
  • 0-1 years of relevant technical experience is required.
