Clinical Nutrition Specialist

Position Overview
The Clinical Nutrition Specialist is accountable for the dietary management of patients. This role involves planning, evaluating, and implementing individualized nutritional care strategies. The specialist will also assist in modifying menus and addressing various nutritional needs.
Work Schedule
This is a Per Diem position requiring availability on Mondays and Fridays from 9 AM to 5 PM, with the possibility of additional days.
Key Responsibilities
- Mentor and guide junior team members.
- Perform clinical tasks and address basic issues with accuracy and responsiveness.
- Conduct interviews with patients and/or their families to gather nutritional histories, preferences, and document findings in medical records.
- Carry out comprehensive nutritional assessments, create and implement tailored care plans, and propose nutrition strategies for medical review.
- Advise on dietary modifications and supplemental nutrition for patients, ensuring diet orders align with physician directives.
- Provide nutritional education and counseling to patients and families, adhering to prescribed dietary guidelines. Calculate nutrient content for tube feeding and dietary intake as per physician orders.
- Assist in updating patient menus based on preferences and contribute to the development of standardized recipes, while overseeing food service staff in proper food handling and portion control.
- Support clinical operations by assisting team members and management in daily tasks.
- Facilitate individual and group educational sessions, and connect clients with community resources as necessary. Engage in and promote wellness initiatives.
- Establish effective communication channels regarding nutrition information within the organization and the community.
- Conduct training sessions for culinary and interdisciplinary teams on therapeutic diets and related subjects.
- Participate in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement activities, including data collection and execution of related tasks as directed.
- Address operational challenges and technical issues, escalating them to senior staff when necessary; adapt existing tools or processes as needed.
- Perform additional duties as required. All listed responsibilities are essential functions of the role under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Qualifications
- Master's Degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience is required.
- Current Registered Dietitian Certification from the Commission on Dietetic Registration is mandatory.
- Certification as a Dietitian Nutritionist in New York State (CDN) may be required.
- Advanced or specialized certifications are preferred.
- 1-3 years of relevant experience is essential.
- Experience in acute care settings is advantageous.
