Position Overview

The Surgical Pathology Assistant plays a vital role in supporting pathologists during post-mortem examinations, organ preparation, dissection, and evisceration. This position involves working with frozen section tissues and handling intraoperative consultation requests. Additionally, the assistant is responsible for mentoring residents and fellows in procedural and technical skills pertinent to surgical pathology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitates the education of residents and fellows in surgical pathology and autopsy techniques, including gross dissection, reporting, and submission for histologic processing.
  • Guides pathology residents and fellows in frozen section procedures and special techniques, ensuring accurate block selection and sampling of lesions.
  • Assists in the legal authorization process for autopsies, reviews patient charts, and collaborates with pathologists on required techniques.
  • Engages in post-mortem prosection and evisceration, obtaining specimens for biological and toxicological analysis.
  • Conducts frozen section examinations, selecting and preserving tissue for special studies, including immunopathology and electron microscopy.
  • Prepares surgical pathology specimens, ensuring proper accessioning and submission for histologic processing.
  • Submits specimens for ancillary procedures and assists pathologists with eviscerations for microscopic examination.
  • Documents all pertinent gross specimens and microscopic slides, serving as a liaison between the laboratory and medical staff.
  • Participates in quality assurance activities within the pathology department, monitoring safety compliance and quality assurance records.
  • Performs additional related duties as necessary, with all responsibilities considered essential functions of the role.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Current License to practice as a Pathology Assistant is mandatory, along with any specialized certifications as necessary.
  • 0-1 years of relevant technical experience is required.
