Position Overview
The Surgical Pathology Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting pathologists during post-mortem examinations, organ preparation, dissection, and evisceration. This position involves handling frozen section tissues and responding to intraoperative consultation requests. Additionally, the assistant is responsible for mentoring residents and fellows in the procedural and technical aspects of surgical pathology.
Key Responsibilities
- Facilitates the education of residents and fellows in surgical pathology and autopsy methodologies, including gross dissection, reporting, and submission processes for histologic analysis.
- Guides pathology residents and fellows in frozen section techniques and special procedures, ensuring accurate block selection and sampling of lesions and relevant findings.
- Assists in the legal and procedural aspects of autopsy examinations, including reviewing patient charts and initiating procedures for proper consent and clearance.
- Engages in post-mortem prosection and evisceration, obtaining specimens for biological and toxicological assessments, and performing specialized procedures such as frozen sections.
- Conducts frozen section examinations, preserving tissue for advanced studies, including immunopathology and electron microscopy.
- Prepares surgical pathology specimens, ensuring correct accessioning and submission for histologic processing while documenting gross anatomical features.
- Coordinates the submission of specimens for ancillary procedures and assists pathologists in obtaining sections for microscopic evaluation.
- Documents all pertinent gross specimens and microscopic slides, serving as a liaison between laboratory staff and medical personnel.
- Participates in quality assurance initiatives within the pathology department, monitoring compliance and quality assurance activities.
- Performs additional related duties as necessary, with all responsibilities considered essential functions of the role.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor's Degree is required, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- A current license to practice as a Pathology Assistant is mandatory, along with any specialized certifications as needed.
- 0-1 years of relevant technical experience is required.
