Key Responsibilities

Nurses working in a residential environment are tasked with the administration of medications, meticulous review of Medication Administration Records (MARs) to ensure effective medication oversight, de-escalation of crisis situations, and adherence to the Nurse Delegation Program.

Essential Knowledge:

  • Understanding of psychiatric conditions affecting adults.
  • Familiarity with general nursing practices and psychiatric care.
  • Basic comprehension of medical terminology relevant to adult psychiatric treatment.
  • Awareness of psychopharmacology and the application of psychotropic medications in adult care.
  • Expertise in behavior management and crisis intervention techniques, particularly for acute psychotic patients and non-violent crisis scenarios.
  • Knowledge of effective educational strategies tailored for adults with severe and persistent psychiatric disorders.
  • Appreciation for cultural diversity in patient care.
  • Successful completion of Medication Assistance Supervision (MAS) training.
  • Understanding of DMH/NDP program standards.
  • Proficiency in utilizing electronic health records.

Physical Demands:

This role requires frequent standing to access files and distribute medications, with periods of sitting that may extend up to 1.5 to 3 hours for documentation purposes. Walking distances of up to 300 feet may be necessary for medication dispensing. The position also involves frequent squatting or lunging to manage supplies and retrieve materials.

Manual dexterity is essential for writing, handling paperwork, and administering medications. Lifting requirements include handling weights of up to 40-50 lbs from floor to waist on a regular basis.

Additional duties may be assigned by the supervisor as needed.

Primary Job Functions

Clinical Duties:

  • Administers medications while adhering to the Seven Rights of medication administration and monitors consumers for potential side effects, reporting findings to the physician.
  • Provides comprehensive medication education to consumers and their families, detailing uses and possible side effects.
  • Conducts daily reviews of MARs to ensure timely medication management and coordination with medical staff for new prescriptions.
  • Identifies the psychiatric and medical needs of consumers, effectively communicating with physicians regarding treatment plans.
  • Observes consumer behavior during group activities, ensuring accurate information transfer between shifts.
  • Collaborates with the multi-disciplinary team to contribute to the development of interdisciplinary treatment plans.
  • Monitors laboratory results, promptly reporting any abnormalities to the physician.
  • Demonstrates crisis recognition and de-escalation skills, providing emergency care as necessary.
  • Conducts infection control training for consumers.
  • Maintains compliance with the Nurse Delegation Program, including ongoing recertification and MAS calls.
  • Assists consumers with personal care needs.
  • Performs monthly MAR verifications and 24-hour chart checks.
  • Facilitates individual and group training sessions.

Supervision and Professional Development:

  • Seeks clinical supervision and consultation as needed.
  • Actively engages in professional development and skill enhancement.
  • Participates in regularly scheduled staff meetings.

Documentation and Record Keeping:

  • Ensures timely and accurate documentation in accordance with AltaPointe policies.
  • Records all nursing services and observations clearly and concisely.
  • Maintains up-to-date logs and documentation as required.

Interpersonal Skills:

  • Treats consumers with dignity, compassion, and respect.
  • Maintains consumer privacy and confidentiality.
  • Exhibits a cooperative and pleasant demeanor with colleagues and visitors.
  • Responds sensitively to the needs and expectations of consumers.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Participates in Performance Improvement initiatives.
  • Engages in AltaPointe committees as required.
  • Completes assigned tasks promptly and efficiently.
  • Utilizes community resources effectively based on consumer needs.
  • Adheres to AltaPointe Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintains current state licensure and fulfills continuing education requirements.
Qualifications

Must hold a current LPN license in the state of Alabama and possess a valid driver's license.
