Position Overview:

At Tufts University, the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine is dedicated to providing exceptional 24/7 care for pets throughout the year. Since its inception in 1985, our institution has been at the forefront of delivering high-quality medical treatment, consultation, referral, and emergency veterinary services for dogs, cats, and exotic animals. Our facility also serves as the primary clinical training ground for veterinary students, interns, and residents.

Key Responsibilities:

The Senior Veterinary Technician in Inpatient Medicine undertakes advanced and specialized technical procedures with minimal oversight from the supervising veterinarian or technician. This role involves making informed decisions and delivering advanced nursing care to veterinary patients while adhering to the guidance of the attending veterinarian.

In this capacity, the Senior Veterinary Technician is expected to mentor and coach junior staff, as well as train new technicians and supervise veterinary and technician students in executing advanced technical skills and nursing care.

This position is considered essential within the hospital, and the schedule may require coverage during university and calendar holidays on a rotating basis.

Patient Care:
Deliver high-quality patient care, which includes:

  • Monitoring, managing, and implementing treatment plans as directed by clinicians to ensure timely delivery of exceptional care to inpatients, acute cases, exotic animals, and isolation cases.
  • Collaborating with administrative and clinical team members to prioritize and coordinate patient care in a fast-paced environment.
  • Assisting clinicians during procedures.
  • Identifying and communicating changes in patient conditions to the care team.
  • Conducting diagnostic tests as ordered by clinicians, including bench-top laboratory tests.

Teaching Responsibilities:
Teaching duties encompass:

  • Instructing veterinary students and student technicians in all technical aspects of patient care.
  • Assisting in the training, orientation, and mentoring of new Veterinary Technicians and Animal Care Attendants.
  • Coaching and mentoring junior staff as directed by supervisory personnel.
  • Participating in the provision of formal continuing education training.

Research Involvement:
Contributing to studies and projects as needed, including the care of research and laboratory animals.

Clinical Maintenance:
Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining an adequate inventory of medical supplies and pharmaceuticals.
  • Handling controlled substances in accordance with established SOPs.
  • Cleaning and maintaining clinical areas, including treatment and patient housing.
  • Facilitating the maintenance of clinical equipment by identifying malfunctions and scheduling repairs.

Additional Duties:
Other responsibilities as assigned by supervisors may include:

  • Providing coverage for various sections of the hospital as necessary.
  • Participating in service and hospital-wide initiatives as required.
  • Completing a minimum of 6 hours of RACE-approved continuing education annually.
  • Effectively communicating with clients to provide education, explain treatment plans, and review discharge instructions, including medication administration.

Qualifications:
Basic Requirements:

  • Proficiency in advanced technical and procedural skills for treating critically ill patients.
  • Certified Veterinary Technician in good standing, with education or equivalent experience consistent with the role of Veterinary Technician II.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience as a certified veterinary technician in a university hospital or similar environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently on complex tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively within a diverse team.
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology and veterinary pharmacology, including the ability to identify adverse drug reactions.
  • Proven ability to provide outstanding service to both internal and external clients.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and electronic medical record systems.
  • Ability to independently initiate CPR procedures in the absence of an attending veterinarian.
  • Capability to lift up to 50 lbs with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or associate degree in Veterinary Technology.
  • Veterinary Technician Specialty Certification.
  • Credentialed as a Certified Veterinary Technician.
  • Fear Free Level 1 Certification.
  • RECOVER Basic and Advanced Life Support Certification.
  • Experience in handling exotic animals, including birds, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, rodents, and reptiles.
