Job Overview

Role of the Surgical Veterinary Technician

The Surgical Veterinary Technician plays a crucial role in delivering exceptional peri-operative and intraoperative care for all surgical patients. This position demands strict compliance with current aseptic techniques and operating room protocols. A comprehensive understanding of both soft tissue and orthopedic surgical procedures, along with familiarity with relevant surgical instruments, is essential. The technician is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and functionality of the operating room and surgical equipment, as well as managing the inventory of necessary disposables.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with surgeons and anesthesia personnel to coordinate daily schedules.
  • Confirm patient positioning, surgical margins, and required equipment with the surgical team.
  • Prepare operating rooms for scheduled surgeries.
  • Conduct tests and maintain electrical surgical devices.
  • Ensure operating rooms are adequately stocked and sanitized daily.
  • Manage inventory of surgical implants and disposables.
  • Work closely with the Central Sterilization team to guarantee instrument availability.
  • Maintain accurate surgical logs and facilitate operative reports.
  • Assist with wound care and bandage changes.
  • Perform bloodwork and adhere to established Standard Operating Procedures.

Pre-Surgical Preparation

  • Verify surgical cases and supplies for upcoming procedures.
  • Address any concerns regarding patient preparation and operating room setup prior to induction.
  • Prepare the patient prep area with necessary sterile supplies.
  • Assist anesthesia technicians during the induction process.
  • Ensure proper surgical site preparation and patient positioning.

Intraoperative Duties

  • Maintain aseptic standards throughout the surgical procedure.
  • Assist surgeons by providing sterile surgical support.
  • Perform sponge and instrument counts to ensure safety.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and provide necessary instruments.

Post-Operative Responsibilities

  • Update surgical logs and maintain records of procedures.
  • Clean and disinfect the operating room after each surgery.
  • Restock supplies and manage the surgical core inventory.
