Since its inception in 1985, we have been dedicated to delivering exceptional medical services, consultations, referrals, and emergency veterinary care for dogs, cats, and exotic animals. Our facility also serves as the primary clinical training ground for veterinary students, interns, and residents.

Key Responsibilities

The Senior Veterinary Nursing Specialist in Inpatient Medicine executes advanced and specialized technical procedures with minimal oversight from the attending veterinarian or supervising technician.
This role involves making informed decisions and delivering high-level veterinary patient care while adhering to the attending veterinarian's directives. The position also entails mentoring and guiding junior staff, training new technicians, and supervising veterinary and technician students in advanced technical skills and patient care. The Senior Veterinary Nursing Specialist is a vital member of the hospital team and may be required to cover University and holiday shifts on a rotating basis.

Patient Care Responsibilities - Deliver exceptional patient care, including:
  • Overseeing, managing, and executing treatment plans as directed by clinicians to ensure timely delivery of high-quality care to inpatients, acute cases, exotic animals, and isolation patients.
  • Collaborating with both administrative and clinical teams to coordinate and prioritize patient care in a fast-paced environment.
  • Assisting clinicians during procedures.
  • Identifying and reporting changes in patient conditions to the care team.
  • Conducting diagnostic tests as ordered by clinicians, including bench-top laboratory assessments.
Teaching Responsibilities - Educational duties include:
  • Instructing veterinary students and student technicians in all technical aspects of patient care.
  • Assisting in the training and orientation of new Veterinary Technicians and Animal Care Attendants.
  • Mentoring junior staff members as directed by supervisory personnel.
  • Participating in the provision of formal continuing education training.
Research Contributions
  • Supporting studies and projects as needed, including the care of research/laboratory animals.
Clinical Maintenance Duties - Responsibilities include:
  • Ensuring adequate inventory of medical supplies and pharmaceuticals.
  • Handling controlled substances according to established protocols.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and organization in clinical areas, including treatment and patient housing zones.
  • Facilitating the upkeep of clinical equipment by identifying malfunctions and scheduling repairs.
Additional Responsibilities - Other tasks as assigned by supervisors may include:
  • Providing coverage for other hospital sections as necessary.
  • Engaging in service and hospital-wide initiatives as required.
  • Completing a minimum of 6 hours of RACE-approved continuing education annually.
  • Effectively communicating with clients to provide education, explain treatment plans, and review discharge instructions, including medication administration.
The anticipated schedule for this position is Sunday - Wednesday from 1 PM to 10:15 PM.

Qualifications

Essential Requirements:
  • Proficiency in advanced technical and procedural skills for managing critically ill patients.
  • Certified Veterinary Technician in good standing, with education or equivalent experience as required for Veterinary Technician II.
  • At least 3 years of experience as a certified veterinary technician in a university hospital or similar setting, functioning at a level consistent with a Vet Tech II.
  • Proven ability to work independently on complex tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, capable of working effectively within a diverse team of clinical and administrative professionals.
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology and veterinary pharmacology, including the ability to recognize adverse drug reactions.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing exceptional service to both internal and external clients, and to collaborating effectively as part of a team.
  • Proven ability to instruct students, as evidenced by student feedback.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and electronic medical record systems.
  • Capability to independently initiate CPR procedures in the absence of an attending veterinarian.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs with or without accommodation.
Minimum Required Technical Skills:
  • Safe restraint techniques for cats and dogs.
  • Assessment of the demeanor and responsiveness of dogs and cats.
  • Obtaining vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, and capillary refill time.
  • Ability to identify animals in pain or distress.
  • Proficiency in IV catheterization.
  • Phlebotomy skills (cephalic, saphenous, jugular).
  • Competence in dosage calculations for medications, fluid therapy, and continuous rate infusions.
  • Setting up and monitoring fluid therapy systems.
  • Monitoring and identifying physiological parameters in patients under sedation and general anesthesia.
  • Familiarity with sedatives and tranquilizers.
  • Proficiency in using point-of-care machines.
  • Ability to describe and assist in CPR procedures.
  • Capability to lift up to 50 lbs with or without accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or associate degree in Veterinary Technology preferred.
  • Veterinary Technician Specialty Certification preferred.
  • Credentialed as a Certified Veterinary Technician.
  • Fear Free Level 1 certification preferred.
  • RECOVER basic and advanced life support certification preferred.
  • Skills in handling exotic animals, including birds, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, rodents, small mammals, reptiles, and amphibians.
Compensation

Minimum $26.70, Midpoint $31.80, Maximum $36.80

Salary is determined based on relevant experience, expertise, and internal equity; typically, new hires can expect compensation between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
