The Luke and Lily Lerner Spay/Neuter Clinic at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University offers a unique opportunity for hands-on surgical training while providing essential services to animals in need.

Our clinic specializes in delivering high-quality spay and neuter procedures for shelter and community pets, while simultaneously training veterinary students in the critical skills required for anesthesia and surgery of healthy feline and canine patients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborating with the clinic director to establish and adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that comply with ASV guidelines for High Quality High Volume Spay/Neuter and relevant state and university regulations.
  • Providing technical assistance, equipment setup, and support with animal intake, anesthesia induction and monitoring, surgical preparation, administering vaccines, and recovering surgical patients during busy clinic days.
  • Maintaining accurate controlled drug records and preparing surgical packs for all labs.
Hospital Support
  • When not scheduled in the Lerner Clinic, technicians may work in the Foster Small Animal Hospital or at Tufts at Tech Community Veterinary Clinic, in surgery, anesthesia, or central sterile departments to promote continuous improvement and interdepartmental collaboration.
General Program Support
  • Engaging in shelter medicine activities such as managing the Clinic website, animal transport, or assisting with clinical electives.
  • Supporting our outreach program at local housing authorities by maintaining supplies and medical records, and acting as a liaison between outreach clients and clinical programs.
  • Technicians must be adaptable and flexible as programming needs evolve over time.
Our mission is to educate veterinary students in best practices for small animal sterilization surgeries, provide free or low-cost services to pets in need within the community, and facilitate the surgical training component for Community Medicine.

We are looking for a full-time Veterinary Technician for a 35-hour workweek. The primary schedule is Monday through Friday, with the possibility of one Sunday per month. The clinic does not require on-call hours and offers an opportunity to teach while contributing to our mission.
