Position Overview:
The Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University is dedicated to providing exceptional care for pets around the clock, every day of the year.

Since its inception in 1985, our institution has been committed to delivering high-quality medical treatment, consultation, referral, and emergency veterinary services for dogs, cats, and exotic animals.

Our facility also serves as the primary clinical training ground for veterinary students, interns, and residents.

Key Responsibilities:


This role is eligible for a $2,000 sign-on bonus after the successful completion of 6 months of employment for newly hired staff.


Under the direct supervision of a senior veterinary technician or veterinarian, the Inpatient Veterinary Care Technician is tasked with delivering top-notch nursing care and executing fundamental technical skills and procedures on a diverse range of patients.

The Inpatient Veterinary Care Technician is recognized as an essential member of the hospital team, and the work schedule may involve providing coverage for university and calendar vacations on a rotating basis.

As an Inpatient Veterinary Care Technician, you will:


Monitor, manage, and implement treatment plans as directed by clinicians to ensure the timely delivery of high-quality care to inpatients, acute care cases, exotic animals, and isolation cases.


Collaborate with both administrative and clinical team members throughout the hospital to coordinate and prioritize patient care in a fast-paced environment.

Identify and communicate any changes in patient conditions to the patient care team.

Conduct diagnostic testing as requested by clinicians, including bench-top laboratory tests.

Maintain an adequate supply of medical materials and pharmaceuticals.

Handle controlled substances in accordance with established SOPs as necessary.

Ensure cleanliness and maintenance of clinical areas, including treatment and patient housing zones.

Facilitate the upkeep of clinical equipment by identifying malfunctioning devices and arranging for service.

Instruct veterinary students and student technicians in all technical aspects of patient care.

Assist in studies and projects as required, including the treatment of research/laboratory animals.

Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors, including:

Providing coverage for other sections of the hospital as necessary.

Participating in service and hospital-wide initiatives as required.

Completing a minimum of 6 hours of RACE-approved continuing education annually.


In alignment with our Veterinary Technician Career Ladder, Veterinary Technicians at Foster Hospital for Small Animals at this level can anticipate a minimum starting wage of $24.60 per hour in this specialty department.

Additionally, shift differentials are available, depending on the day and scheduled shift, ranging from $2.00 to $4.00 per hour.

Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:


A high school diploma (or equivalent) and 2 years of experience as a veterinary assistant or veterinary technician, or similar technical experience.

A comprehensive understanding of medical terminology and familiarity with veterinary pharmacology.

Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities for several patients within a busy clinical environment.

Capability to work effectively as part of a diverse team of clinical and administrative professionals.

Basic computer skills, including the ability to learn the electronic medical record system.

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. with or without accommodation.

Required Technical Skills Include:
Safely restraining all species treated in the hospital.

Assessing the demeanor and responsiveness of patients being treated.

Obtaining vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, and capillary refill time.

Phlebotomy and catheter placement.

Calculating dosages for oral and injectable medications.

Monitoring fluid therapy.

Administering oral, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous medications.

Demonstrating the ability to instruct students, as evaluated by student feedback.

Experience with Microsoft Office and electronic medical record systems.

Ability to independently initiate CPR procedures in the absence of an attending veterinarian.

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications:
A Bachelor's or Associate's degree from an AVMA accredited institution.

Eligibility for Certified Veterinary Technician status.

Experience in a specialty or academic hospital setting.

Basic skills in phlebotomy, IV catheter placement, fluid administration, pain identification, anesthetic recovery, and animal handling and restraint.

Experience with exotic animal handling skills, including birds, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, rodents, special small mammals (such as chinchillas or hedgehogs), reptiles, and amphibians.
