Position Overview

The Histotechnician plays a vital role in the laboratory by conducting both moderate and intricate specimen procedures within the realms of anatomical and surgical pathology, as well as immunohistochemistry. This position is responsible for receiving, processing, and preparing patient tissue specimens for detailed microscopic examination and analysis by the Pathologist. Key tasks include logging, batching, cutting, mounting, and staining procedures.

Core Responsibilities

  • Execute routine and advanced laboratory procedures, ensuring the production of high-quality microscopic slides for pathologist interpretation. This includes accessioning tissue specimens, assisting Pathologist Assistants, sectioning frozen tissue using a cryostat, embedding tissue specimens, performing microtomy and staining, preparing solutions and stains, and conducting specialty testing with histochemical and/or immunohistochemical techniques. Quality control procedures are also a critical component of this role.
  • Ensure accurate and timely processing of specimens by reviewing orders and confirming correct patient labeling, adhering strictly to quality control and assurance policies.
  • Maintain safety, education, and competency standards. Regularly stock, rotate, and request supplies to ensure availability in the work area. Perform various clerical duties and participate in departmental or system-wide meetings, projects, or committees as assigned. Assist in training new employees and students, and perform proficiency testing as required.
  • Fulfill CLIA defined responsibilities related to testing personnel qualifications and responsibilities.
  • Undertake additional duties as assigned by supervisory staff.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's or Vocational degree in medical laboratory science from a regionally accredited institution, including completion of a clinical internship, or
  • Vocational or Technical Training in a comprehensive military laboratory science program, or
  • Bachelor's degree in a related science from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum of 2 years of clinical lab experience in relevant analytics.
  • CLIA defined qualifications for testing personnel.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Histotechnician (HT) certification is required from a recognized agency such as ASCP or NCA within 180 days of employment.

Physical Demands

  • Light Work: Ability to lift weights up to 20 lbs occasionally and up to 10 lbs frequently.
