Position Overview
The Histotechnician plays a crucial role in the field of anatomical and surgical pathology, as well as immunohistochemistry. This position involves the meticulous processing and preparation of patient tissue specimens for detailed microscopic examination by a Pathologist. Key responsibilities include logging, batching, cutting, mounting, and staining procedures to ensure accurate diagnostic results.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute routine and advanced laboratory procedures, supporting the generation of microscopic slides for pathologist interpretation. Responsibilities include accessing tissue specimens, assisting Pathologist Assistants, utilizing a cryostat for frozen tissue sectioning, embedding and processing tissue specimens, performing microtomy and staining, preparing various solutions and stains, and conducting specialty testing through histochemical and/or immunohistochemical techniques. Quality control procedures are also a vital part of this role.
- Ensure the integrity of specimens by verifying correct patient identification and adhering to safe specimen handling protocols. Assist with biopsy collection as needed and evaluate results for accuracy, addressing any test discrepancies.
- Maintain safety and competency standards by regularly stocking and requesting supplies to ensure operational efficiency. Engage in clerical duties and participate in departmental meetings, projects, or committees as assigned. Contribute to the training of new employees and students, and assist in proficiency testing and annual competency evaluations.
- Adhere to CLIA defined responsibilities, ensuring compliance with testing personnel qualifications for both moderate and high complexity testing.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support the laboratory's operational needs.
Required Qualifications
- An Associate's or Vocational degree in medical laboratory science from an accredited institution, including completion of a clinical internship, or
- Vocational or Technical Training from a comprehensive military laboratory science program, or
- A Bachelor's degree in a related science from an accredited institution, along with two years of clinical laboratory experience in relevant analytics.
- Compliance with CLIA defined qualifications for testing personnel is mandatory.
Licenses/Certifications
- Histotechnician (HT) certification is required from a recognized agency such as ASCP or NCA within a specified timeframe.
Physical Demands
- The role involves light work, including lifting weights up to 20 lbs occasionally and up to 10 lbs frequently.
