Position Overview

The Histology Technician embodies the core mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adhering to the organization's ethical standards and compliance protocols while following all applicable policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

This role provides essential technical and clinical assistance to a variety of physicians and specialists by conducting histology-related laboratory analyses that support the diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and ongoing care of patients with diverse medical conditions. The Histology Technician serves as a crucial link between medical staff and physicians, addressing inquiries and offering educational support.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Conducts a range of laboratory tests, including sample processing, staining, and slide preparation, utilizing specialized histological techniques.
  2. Monitors inventory and expenses, and prepares documentation for reporting purposes.
  3. Ensures proper cleaning, maintenance, and operation of laboratory instruments.
  4. Prepares the laboratory environment for testing, including the safe disposal of chemicals.
  5. May undertake additional responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

Essential:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent GED.
  2. Up to two years of experience in a relevant laboratory setting.
  3. Prior experience in molecular laboratories, including techniques such as in situ hybridization and polymerase chain reaction.

Desirable:

  1. One of the following educational qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in biological sciences
  • Associate's degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution
  • Completion of education and training comprising 60 semester hours from an accredited institution, including 24 hours in medical laboratory technology courses
  • 24 semester hours that encompass 6 hours of chemistry, 6 hours of biology, and 12 hours of additional coursework in chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology
HT(ASCP) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology as a Histotechnician, or eligibility to obtain certification.Experience in immunohistochemistry and tissue processing techniques.
