Anatomical Pathology Technician

Position Overview
The Histotechnician plays a crucial role in the laboratory, performing intricate specimen procedures in anatomical and surgical pathology as well as immunohistochemistry. This position involves the meticulous handling of patient tissue specimens, ensuring they are processed and prepared for detailed microscopic examination by the Pathologist. Key tasks include logging, batching, cutting, mounting, and staining of specimens.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute routine and advanced laboratory procedures, ensuring the production of high-quality microscopic slides for pathologist interpretation. Responsibilities include accessioning tissue specimens, assisting Pathologist Assistants, sectioning frozen tissues with a cryostat, embedding and processing specimens, performing microtomy and staining, and preparing necessary solutions and stains.
- Conduct quality control procedures to assess the integrity of specimens, verifying patient identification and ensuring safe specimen handling. May assist in biopsy collection and evaluate results for accuracy, addressing any testing issues that arise.
- Maintain compliance with safety, education, and competency standards. Regularly stock and request supplies to ensure availability in the laboratory. Participate in departmental meetings, projects, or committees as needed, and assist in training new employees and students.
- Fulfill CLIA defined responsibilities, ensuring adherence to testing personnel qualifications and standards.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support laboratory operations.
Required Qualifications
- Associate's or Vocational degree in medical laboratory science from an accredited institution, along with completion of a clinical internship.
- Completion of a comprehensive military laboratory science program or a Bachelor's degree in a related field with two years of clinical lab experience.
- Certification as a Histotechnician (HT) from a recognized agency such as ASCP or NCA is required within a specified timeframe.
Physical Requirements
- This position involves light work, including lifting weights up to 20 lbs occasionally and up to 10 lbs frequently.
