Position Overview

The Histology Technician embodies the core mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adhering to the organization's ethical standards and compliance protocols while following all relevant policies, procedures, and regulatory guidelines.

This role provides essential technical and clinical support to a variety of physicians and specialists by conducting histology-related laboratory tests that assist in diagnosing, prognosing, treating, and monitoring patients with diverse health issues. The Histology Technician serves as a vital link between medical professionals and laboratory staff, addressing inquiries and offering educational support.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Conducts a range of laboratory tests, including processing, staining, and preparing slides, as well as utilizing special histological stains.
  2. Monitors inventory and expenditures, and prepares documentation for reporting purposes.
  3. Ensures proper cleaning, maintenance, and operation of laboratory instruments.
  4. Maintains laboratory equipment and prepares workspaces for testing, including the safe disposal of chemicals.
  5. May undertake additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent GED.
  2. Up to two years of experience in a related field.
  3. Prior experience in molecular laboratories, including in situ hybridization and polymerase chain reaction techniques.

Preferred:

  1. One of the following educational backgrounds:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in biological sciences
  • Associate's degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution
  • Completion of 60 semester hours from an accredited institution, including 24 hours of medical laboratory technology courses
  • 24 semester hours comprising 6 hours of chemistry, 6 hours of biology, and 12 hours in any combination of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology
HT(ASCP) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology as a Histotechnician, or eligibility to complete it.Experience in immunohistochemistry and tissue processing is advantageous.
