About the Role

Nationwide Children's Hospital is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Mental Health Specialist I to join our team. As a key member of our interdisciplinary team, you will provide high-quality, trauma-informed care to pediatric patients and their families.

Key Responsibilities
  • Clinical Care
    • Participate in specialized patient care activities, including providing encouragement, support, and reinforcing positive behavior with a therapeutic, calm approach.
    • Identify and record relevant information for common diagnostic groups, including major depression, bipolar affective disorder, psychotic disorder, and attention deficit and disruptive behavior disorders.
    • Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families, utilizing trauma-informed care philosophies.
    • Lead, co-lead, or reinforce teaching of symptom management, including relaxation techniques, anger management, and coping skills.
    • Assist with admission and discharge processes, completing unit/room orientation and reinforcing information given to patients.
  • Data Collection and Reporting
    • Collect, document, and report vital signs, temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, heights, weights, abdominal girth, and oxygen saturation.
  • Basic Supportive Care
    • Provide hygiene care, including bathing, shampooing, and mouth care.
    • Assist with nutrition, including oral feedings, gravity tube feedings, and meal tray delivery.
    • Support mobility, including ambulation and transfer assistance.
    • Provide elimination care, including urinary catheter insertion, peri-care, and output measurement.
    • Apply NCH-approved over-the-counter skin products to prevent skin breakdown.
    • Reposition patients and document per NCH Skin Risk Protocol.
  • Procedures
    • Collect specimens, including urine, stool, and blood.
    • Perform simple dressing changes, including band-aids, established G-tube sites, and surgical skin prep.
    • Assist with procedures, including IV insertion, lumbar puncture, and chest tube insertion and removal.
Requirements
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Students in a related field can apply after completing half of their undergraduate program, or one year of comparable experience in a hospital setting within the past three years.
  • Good written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Neat appearance, good grooming, and professional manner.
  • CPR training (American Heart Association CPR for Family and Friends course or Health Care Provider course or Red Cross equivalent).
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to see, hear, stand, walk, speak, read, and perform basic math calculations.
  • Ability to apply body mechanics in lifting or moving patients and/or equipment.
  • Ability to independently lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to move or reposition patients of any weight or size with assistance.
