The Operating Room Specialist provides essential surgical technology expertise to ensure both direct and indirect patient care within surgical environments. This role involves assisting surgeons during operative and invasive procedures, guaranteeing the availability and proper utilization of surgical instruments and equipment.
The specialist demonstrates proficiency in surgical techniques, upholding a sterile environment, and anticipating the needs of the surgical team. They serve as a vital resource for fellow technologists, offering guidance, sharing knowledge, and providing support. Additionally, this position includes the responsibility of training new surgical technologists, aiding them in developing the necessary skills and knowledge for their roles.
The Operating Room Specialist applies advanced knowledge and skills acquired through certification to ensure superior patient care and safety during surgical procedures. Professionalism, integrity, and empathy are paramount in all interactions with colleagues, patients, and healthcare professionals. The specialist also takes on additional responsibilities as needed to support the surgical team's success and deliver optimal patient outcomes.
Qualifications:
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Associate's Degree in Surgical Technology or a Certificate of completion in Surgical Technology from an accredited program.
CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
Certified Surgical Technologist upon hire.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Familiarity with standard equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
- Occasional travel to other facilities may be required.
- Must be able to drive personal vehicle for business purposes.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Fluent in reading, writing, comprehending, and speaking English.
- Basic computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, email, and web browsing.
- Multicultural sensitivity.
- Critical thinking skills with the ability to make independent judgments.
Essential Functions:
- Preparation for surgeon-specific operative/invasive procedures that is timely, accurate, effective, and efficient. Ensures instruments, equipment, and sutures are appropriate, complete, and functional. Sets up a sterile field and is scrubbed prior to patient entry into the room. Organizes the case setup to facilitate smooth transitions for the surgical team.
- Scrubs on a variety of procedures across multiple specialties. Capable of independently managing the surgical field. Adapts to the surgeon's techniques and preferences, demonstrating confidence and competence during both routine and emergency procedures.
- Plans and anticipates expected and unexpected intraoperative events, providing timely interventions as necessary. Maintains a calm and steady demeanor, prepared for unforeseen circumstances.
- Communicates and collaborates effectively with team members, sharing knowledge and ensuring timely counts and actions. Mentors and precepts staff in a constructive manner, fostering a positive work environment.
