About Earthjustice
Earthjustice stands as the leading nonprofit organization dedicated to environmental law. We tackle the most significant and groundbreaking cases nationwide.

Our mission harnesses the power of legal action and collaborative efforts to safeguard public health, protect stunning landscapes and invaluable ecosystems, facilitate the transition to 100% clean energy, and combat the pressing challenges of climate change.

We collaborate with numerous organizations, tribes, individuals, and communities to confront the urgent environmental issues of our time and foster meaningful change. Our commitment is driven by the belief that the earth deserves a dedicated advocate.

Position Overview
Earthjustice is currently seeking applications for two roles within our Midwest Regional Office: Supervising Senior Attorney and Senior Attorney. This office engages in all three of Earthjustice's program areas—climate, healthy communities, and lands and wildlife.

Our initiatives involve litigation against projects such as pipelines and mining that threaten the environment and tribal rights, as well as advocacy for clean air, soil, and water.

We are particularly focused on collaborating with communities throughout the Midwest, emphasizing areas such as Detroit, Flint, and the broader Chicagoland region.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee and conduct advocacy efforts before governmental agencies and courts as necessary.
  • Manage litigation cases from inception to resolution, collaborating with technical experts as needed.
  • Formulate and implement non-litigation advocacy strategies in partnership with attorneys and policy staff.
  • Conduct thorough investigations and develop legal arguments to support advocacy or litigation efforts.
  • Supervise the activities of Associate Attorneys, Litigation Assistants, and Law Clerks.
  • Build and maintain relationships with co-counsel and a diverse array of clients and coalition partners.
  • Collaborate effectively with various departments within Earthjustice, including Policy, Communications, and Operations.
  • Act as a spokesperson for Earthjustice and its clients.
  • Contribute to long-term planning and strategy development for the Midwest Regional Office.
  • Engage actively in fostering a culture of mentorship and respect among colleagues.
  • Participate in initiatives aimed at creating a diverse and inclusive workplace.
Qualifications
  • Juris Doctorate (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • For Senior Attorney: Minimum of six years of relevant litigation experience; for Supervising Senior Attorney: Minimum of eight years.
  • Experience in environmental and administrative law is essential.
  • Strong communication skills for articulating litigation goals to the media.
  • Excellent legal research, writing, and advocacy skills.
  • Ability to supervise and mentor junior staff effectively.
  • Awareness and sensitivity to diverse cultural backgrounds.
Compensation
Salary is commensurate with experience and location, with a competitive benefits package. Earthjustice is committed to diversity and is an equal opportunity employer.
