Position OverviewWe are currently looking for two roles within our Midwest Regional Office: Senior Attorney and Supervising Senior Attorney. This office engages in all three of Earthjustice's core program areas: climate, healthy communities, and lands and wildlife.
The selected attorneys will tackle cases against environmentally harmful projects, such as pipelines and mining operations, while advocating for clean air, soil, and water. Our focus includes working closely with communities in the Midwest, particularly in areas facing environmental challenges.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and oversee advocacy efforts before governmental agencies and in judicial settings.
- Manage litigation processes from inception to resolution, collaborating with technical experts as necessary.
- Design and implement non-litigation advocacy strategies in partnership with colleagues.
- Conduct thorough investigations and develop legal arguments to support our clients' objectives.
- Supervise the work of junior attorneys and support staff.
- Foster relationships with co-counsel and a diverse array of clients and partners.
- Collaborate effectively with various departments within Earthjustice.
- Act as a spokesperson for Earthjustice and its clients.
- Contribute to strategic planning and goal-setting for the Midwest Regional Office.
- Engage in mentorship and support a culture of learning among staff.
- Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the workplace.
- Juris Doctorate (JD) from an ABA-accredited institution.
- For Senior Attorney: Minimum of six years of relevant litigation experience; for Supervising Senior Attorney: Minimum of eight years.
- Admission or eligibility for admission to the Illinois Bar.
- Expertise in environmental and administrative law.
- Strong communication skills for conveying advocacy goals.
- Excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy abilities.
- Demonstrated initiative and a strong work ethic.
- Experience in mentoring junior staff is preferred.
- Awareness of diverse cultural perspectives and sensitivity to various community needs.
