Position Overview
Earthjustice is currently seeking applications for two roles within our Midwest Regional Office: Lead Environmental Counsel and Senior Legal Advocate. This office engages in all three of Earthjustice's primary program areas—climate, healthy communities, and land and wildlife.

Our initiatives include litigation against harmful pipelines and mining operations that threaten the environment and tribal rights, as well as advocating for clean air, soil, and water.

We focus on working with communities throughout the Midwest, particularly in areas facing environmental injustices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee and conduct advocacy efforts before governmental agencies and courts as necessary.
  • Manage litigation cases from inception to resolution, collaborating with technical experts as needed.
  • Design and implement non-litigation advocacy strategies in partnership with attorneys and policy staff.
  • Conduct thorough investigations and formulate legal theories to support advocacy or litigation efforts.
  • Supervise Associate Attorneys, Litigation Assistants, and Law Clerks in their project work.
  • Build and maintain relationships with co-counsel and a diverse array of clients and coalition partners.
  • Collaborate effectively with other departments within Earthjustice, including Policy, Communications, Development, and Operations.
  • Act as a spokesperson for Earthjustice and its clients.
  • Assist in developing and executing media strategies with communications professionals.
  • Engage in long-term planning and strategy development that aligns with the vision for future work in the Midwest.
  • Contribute to a culture of learning and mentorship, supporting colleagues in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Participate in initiatives aimed at fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace.
Qualifications
  • Juris Doctorate (JD) from an ABA accredited law school.
  • For Senior Legal Advocate: Minimum of six years of relevant litigation experience; for Lead Environmental Counsel: Minimum of eight years required.
  • Experience in environmental and administrative law is essential.
  • Strong communication skills for conveying litigation goals to the media.
  • Excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy abilities.
  • Demonstrated initiative, sound judgment, and a collaborative work style.
  • Proficiency in managing technical issues and collaborating with experts.
  • Ability to develop partnerships with community-based organizations focused on advocacy.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary for case-related activities.
  • Experience in mentoring junior staff is highly valued.
  • Awareness and sensitivity to the diverse needs of individuals from various backgrounds.
