Position Summary:

The role involves overseeing technical aspects of design and drafting, ensuring adherence to company standards and policies, and managing personnel effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage man-hour budgets and review forecasts.
  • Draft scope documents as required.
  • Assess space, manpower, and equipment needs.
  • Recruit and select staff.
  • Prepare and analyze project schedules.
  • Direct and oversee work activities.
  • Facilitate and participate in meetings.
  • Assign tasks and manage employee workloads.
  • Ensure compliance with technical standards.
  • Implement and uphold specifications and procedures.
  • Conduct quality reviews.
  • Provide training and conduct interviews for personnel.
  • Perform additional job-related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements:

A Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an accredited institution, accompanied by a minimum of nine (9) years of relevant experience, primarily within the refinery, petrochemical, or chemical sectors, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that enables the successful execution of the essential duties outlined above.

Licensing Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid Driver's License as mandated by state law.
  • Professional Engineer License is preferred.

Essential Skills:

  • Desire to mentor junior engineers.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and similar software.
  • Experienced with discipline-specific software applications (e.g., ETAP, STAAD, CAESAR).
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are essential.
  • Familiarity with regulatory codes and requirements relevant to the discipline.
  • In-depth knowledge of design principles within the engineering field.
  • Understanding of key aspects of Civil, Mechanical, Instrumentation, Electrical, and Chemical Engineering.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to navigate industrial plant and construction sites, including walking up to one mile outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Capability to work in protective clothing that may increase body temperature for short durations.
  • Ability to use multi-level stair towers and ladders independently.
  • Ability to hear safety alarms while wearing hearing protection.
  • Proficiency in sitting at a desk and operating a computer for extended periods.
  • Physical capability to stand, use hands and fingers, reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and communicate effectively.
  • Visual acuity to distinguish colors and operate a motor vehicle with a valid driver's license.
  • Regular lifting and carrying of 15 lbs., with occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs.

Client-Specific Job Duties:

Basic Function:

In a collaborative team environment, the Capital Projects Process Engineer is tasked with optimizing capital projects, implementing best practices for reliability, and supporting plant operations as necessary. This position requires interaction with engineers, specialists, and technicians on-site, as well as corporate technical networks and vendors to address issues, assist with turnarounds, and enhance plant reliability and performance.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing and supporting initiatives that enhance profitability, reliability, environmental stewardship, and safety integrity of chemical plants.
  • Assessing proposed projects to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance product quality while minimizing risks.
  • Evaluating alternative engineering solutions for existing and future plants, providing sound technical recommendations.
  • Supporting project evaluations and managing change packages with technology input and risk assessments.
  • Providing process design support for capital projects, including the preparation of Process Design Packages throughout project phases.
  • Overseeing the execution phase of projects.
  • Collaborating with vendors and contractors to develop work scope packages and schedules aligned with process design requirements.
  • Establishing and maintaining specifications and standards for engineering and construction vendors.
  • Ensuring projects adhere to sound engineering and construction practices while effectively communicating design issues with stakeholders.
  • Preparing cost estimates and schedules for process design accounts.
  • Drafting technical sections for inquiries and purchase orders, reviewing bids, and recommending vendor selections.
  • Providing weekly progress reports to management on assigned projects.
  • Executing projects within agreed budgets and timelines.
  • Aligning internal processes with corporate standards, ensuring high accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Mentoring less experienced engineers and providing technical training.
  • Effectively communicating technical recommendations and achievements in both verbal and written formats.
  • Incorporating principles of process safety, environmental responsibility, and reliable operations into all projects and tasks.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering is required.

Work Experience:

  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in world-scale chemical and petrochemical process unit design and/or operations.
  • Expertise in process engineering, manufacturing support, or plant operations is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the Phased/Gated project development environment is advantageous.
  • Experience in executing brownfield plant projects is desirable.
  • A strong understanding of business drivers, change management, reliability processes, and maintenance workflows is essential.
  • A commitment to safety, integrity, and ethical business practices is required.

Skills:

  • Comprehensive understanding of unit operations and process safety management systems.
  • Excellent leadership, ethics, teamwork, and communication skills with a focus on results.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Negotiation skills and conflict resolution abilities across departmental lines are essential.
  • Capability to prepare and present complex technical reports.
  • Ability to summarize conclusions and impacts for decision-makers.
  • Prioritization of work based on organizational value is crucial.
  • Familiarity with AspenTech process simulation tools is a plus.
  • Experience in process design supporting capital projects is an advantage.
