Role Responsibilities

COTS Housing Support Specialists play a vital role in assisting clients within our Emergency Adult Shelter and Emergency Family Shelter programs. Your primary responsibility will be to help clients formulate a housing strategy aimed at achieving and maintaining stable living conditions. Additionally, you will guide clients in accessing essential community resources to ensure housing retention.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Establishing and nurturing professional relationships with clients to help them navigate various challenges.
  • Assisting clients in completing Public Housing Authority applications for rental assistance and other local/state housing programs.
  • Guiding clients through benefits navigation, including 3Squares, Reach Up, SSI, and SSDI.
  • Connecting families and individuals to resources that facilitate their transition from emergency shelter to permanent housing.
  • Creating a housing support crisis plan that emphasizes early intervention and prevention strategies.
  • Collaborating with referral agencies to determine client eligibility and verification processes.
Qualifications

To be successful in this role, candidates should meet the following criteria:

  • A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent; a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, Education, Human Services, Counseling, or a related field is preferred.
  • At least one year of relevant case management experience is required.
  • Experience working with individuals facing homelessness and crisis intervention is preferred, along with knowledge of available resources for families and individuals.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals experiencing mental health issues, medical challenges, substance abuse, domestic violence, and employment barriers.
  • Familiarity with community resources and the ability to teach essential life skills, such as budgeting and personal safety, is necessary.
  • Knowledge of the regulations and procedures of the Vermont Agency of Human Services is preferred.

This is a full-time, hourly position that offers benefits. The standard work schedule is Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, with a starting hourly wage of $21.00.
