Position Overview

The Surgical Technician plays a vital role in delivering exceptional patient care within the Operating Room environment. As an integral member of the surgical services team, this professional undertakes perioperative responsibilities for patients undergoing surgical interventions, under the supervision of the circulating nurse. The primary focus of this role is to function as the scrub nurse during surgical procedures.

Key Responsibilities

1. Execute the duties and responsibilities of a scrub person, guided by a registered professional nurse.
2. Support the circulating nurse by preparing all necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment for each surgical case, utilizing the surgeon's preference card.
3. Verify and confirm the sterility of instruments, checking tapes, dates, and the integrity of wrappers.
4. Unpack sterile supplies for assigned surgical cases.
5. Assess and troubleshoot equipment functionality prior to use, ensuring suction and other devices are operational, and remove any malfunctioning equipment from service.
6. Conduct surgical counts in collaboration with circulating nurses, adhering to established policies.
7. Perform surgical scrub techniques and gowning/gloving procedures for oneself and the surgical team.
8. Maintain a sterile environment and take immediate corrective actions to address any breaches in sterile technique.
9. Organize instruments, basins, sutures, and materials systematically to facilitate accurate counting at the conclusion of procedures.
10. Utilize all surgical devices and instruments appropriately.
11. Implement standard draping techniques.
12. Safely and efficiently pass and handle instruments to the surgical team, including holding retractors as directed by the supervising physician.
13. Disassemble setups and prepare instruments for sterilization, actively participating in turnover activities.
14. Collaborate with the surgeon to ensure proper labeling of all specimens originating from the sterile field.
15. Confirm the accuracy and expiration status of all implants prior to their acceptance on the sterile field.
16. Ensure all fluids are correctly labeled within the sterile field.
17. Guarantee the safe and appropriate use of equipment throughout surgical procedures.
18. Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of surgical procedures.

This position qualifies for a $10,000 tuition repayment program.

Qualifications

A High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
* Successful completion of a nationally accredited surgical technologist educational program, along with a certified surgical technologist (CST) credential from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), and maintenance of annual NYS required Operating Room CEU credits, is mandatory.
OR
* Graduation from an accredited practical nursing program or a Nursing Vocational/Technical school, along with a current license to practice as a Practical Nurse in New York State, and maintenance of annual NYS required Operating Room CEU credits, is required.
