Animal Care Specialist

Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Animal Care Technician to join our team at Northwell Health. As an Animal Care Technician, you will play a critical role in ensuring the health and well-being of laboratory animals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Cage Cleaning and Maintenance
    • Perform routine cleaning and maintenance on equipment to ensure a safe and healthy environment for the animals.
    • Decontaminate and sterilize required facility items to prevent the spread of disease.
  • Animal Care and Handling
    • Receive, house, and transport animals, supplies, feed, and bedding in a safe and efficient manner.
    • Log information pertinent to cage and equipment maintenance to ensure proper upkeep.
  • Animal Health and Welfare
    • Identify and notify veterinary staff of ill or injured animals, providing research-specific specialized diets, treated water, and specialized housing arrangements as needed.
    • Perform census of animals and cages, recording related information as required by approved procedures.
  • Facility Maintenance
    • Clean work areas, wash and wax flooring, walls, ceiling, and lighting fixtures in animal holding rooms, cage wash areas, and associated corridors.
    • Maintain inventory of stock entering and leaving the facility.
  • Quality Control
    • Log information pertinent to autoclaves to ensure sanitation and sterilization processes are maintained.
    • Assess condition of caging equipment and make recommendations for equipment replacement or repair.
  • Additional Responsibilities
    • Sanitize caging and related equipment with automated cage washing equipment and sterilizers.
    • Perform related duties as required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Current Lab Animal Technician (AALAS) Certification in New York State required, plus specialized certifications as needed.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience required.
