Position Overview

We are seeking a full-time Automation Engineer to join our team at CONTINUUS Pharmaceuticals. This role is essential for supporting the deployment of integrated process control systems for our innovative continuous manufacturing techniques. The successful candidate will be responsible for the effective integration of automation platforms with proprietary process technologies and new continuous unit operations. This position involves maintaining existing automation systems and supporting the automation engineering and construction of new manufacturing facilities. The individual will execute control system design, development, installation, commissioning, and qualification for pharmaceutical projects, showcasing both hands-on automation system integration and vendor management capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee standalone local control systems (NI LabVIEW) and maintain current pilot plant integrated control systems (DeltaV). Responsibilities include managing vendor communications, licensing, troubleshooting, and hardware/software maintenance.
  • Provide automation support for the development of new process technologies, including defining automation scope, vendor management, drawing reviews, hardware integration, software development, wiring inspections, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
  • Develop functional specifications for local control systems and program user interfaces using NI LabVIEW or Rockwell PLC/HMI.
  • Assist in the design and specification of DCS, PLC, and SCADA-based process control systems for integrated continuous manufacturing projects.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical and process engineers during process commissioning and qualification activities.
  • Support the creation and revision of documentation for process control system commissioning, operations, and troubleshooting, including User Requirements Specifications, Functional Requirements Specifications, Configuration Specifications, Standard Operating Protocols, Commissioning Plans, and Validation Protocols.
  • Manage contractors for automation and control deliverables.

Educational Requirements

  • B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, or M.S. with no prior experience.

Experience and Skill Requirements

  • Proficient in I/O configuration and wiring diagrams.
  • Knowledge and experience with process instrumentation (e.g., valves, sensors, motors, controllers).
  • Familiarity with NI LabVIEW, Rockwell Automation, Emerson DeltaV, or similar automation and control platforms is required.
  • Hands-on experience in designing and programming NI LabVIEW, Rockwell/Allen Bradley PLC, or Emerson DeltaV DCS for manufacturing process control and automation is preferred.
  • Understanding of data historian (OSI PI) and ISA standards.
  • Ability to interpret CAD and piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Experience in pharmaceutical manufacturing and cGMP is advantageous.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with excellent organizational abilities.
  • Capacity to maintain effective communication and relationships with stakeholders, leadership teams, cross-functional groups, internal customers, and vendors.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, prioritize tasks, and complete projects effectively.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and analytical capabilities.
