Position Overview:
The Community Engagement Coordinator will play a crucial role in reaching out to individuals and families experiencing homelessness.
This position involves conducting outreach and engagement efforts to connect with homeless individuals residing in shelters, on the streets, in encampments, or in other unsuitable living conditions through direct, face-to-face interventions.

The focus will be on assisting homeless households or individuals who may also be dealing with Severe Mental Illness (SMI) or co-occurring Substance Use Disorder (SUD), linking them to the appropriate homeless response teams and coordinated entry systems for housing solutions.

Responsibilities include identifying individuals on Veteran and Chronic By-Name-Lists and performing initial housing assessments utilizing the SPDAT tool. Services provided may encompass support with housing connections, obtaining identification and eligibility documents, food and clothing assistance, linking to income support through SOAR or other means, facilitating access to physical and mental health care, and creating personalized service plans.

Collaboration with agency staff is essential to share insights regarding available services for the homeless and subpopulations, as well as the methods to access these services and useful contacts to ensure clients receive comprehensive support.

The Coordinator will maintain precise data and program records that align with the standards set by WMCAA, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, and compiling program reports as requested by management.

A positive attitude towards assigned duties, clients, and colleagues is vital, along with a willingness to collaborate effectively with others.
Active participation in staff meetings is expected, including preparation, problem-solving, and providing constructive feedback to team members.

The Coordinator will also assist the Supportive Housing and Homeless Services (SHHS) department in various aspects of our mission as directed by management.
This role supports Wayne Metro's mission of empowering individuals and communities to thrive and be healthy.

The work environment is typically a professional office setting with a quiet atmosphere. A Bachelor's degree in human services is preferred, or a combination of education and relevant experience is acceptable.
Candidates should have a minimum of three years of experience in conducting outreach to individuals experiencing severe and persistent mental illness.

Knowledge of Wayne County demographics, the needs of the homeless population, and available services is essential. Familiarity with the Michigan Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) is preferred but not mandatory.
Proficiency in basic internet applications and programs, including Google technology and Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel), is required.


Travel Requirements:
The ability to travel to various outreach sites is necessary.
Although Covid-19 vaccination is no longer mandated, it is encouraged to prioritize the safety of staff and clients.
The work schedule is Monday through Friday, with specific hours determined by departmental needs.
