Sony Pictures Television is seeking a dynamic leader to join our organization as the Head of Research and Strategic Insights. As a premier independent studio, Sony Pictures Television creates original programming for both traditional networks and digital platforms. We are in search of a seasoned strategic research and data insights professional to support SPT's Games and Nonfiction divisions, as well as the Corporate Development and Finance teams. Utilizing a blend of secondary and syndicated data analysis, data science, business intelligence, primary research, content evaluation, and audience consumption analysis, the Head of Research will act as the primary resource for significant SPT series throughout their life cycles. This includes identifying trends, analyzing market opportunities, testing concepts and pilots, positioning content, and conducting promotional and post-launch assessments. This leadership position reports directly to the VP of Research, Strategy & Analysis.

Key Responsibilities:

Series Research
The Head of Research will lead the research initiatives for SPT's Games and Nonfiction series. This role requires a deep understanding of genre trends and opportunities, conducting both qualitative and quantitative primary research, and monitoring series performance to enhance departmental development strategies, comprehend genre trends, and refine the marketability and performance of pitches and current series.

  • Possess comprehensive experience utilizing various insight and data tools to address critical business inquiries, including primary research, consumption data analysis, and social analytics.
  • Leverage studio-wide tools and data sources to gain in-depth insights into content performance and audience engagement.
  • Evaluate the television landscape, genre trajectories, and audience growth opportunities for development and production using industry-standard consumption data.
  • Assess the adaptation potential of existing intellectual property by analyzing audience segments and key success factors.
  • Employ social media listening techniques to understand audience needs and validate hypotheses regarding content development and marketing opportunities.
  • Utilize syndicated consumer and audience insight tools to address content and market landscape inquiries.
  • Design and implement primary research studies to evaluate concepts, pilots, and series comprehensively.
  • Innovate primary research methodologies and explore new techniques and methodologies from external vendors.
  • Collaborate with internal executives and external research vendors to manage and coordinate projects effectively.
  • Work alongside research partners across Sony Pictures Entertainment and contribute to cross-functional teams with diverse stakeholders.
  • Exhibit strong presentation skills, capable of conveying strategic data narratives that are concise, visual, and impactful, enhancing engagement and adoption of insights across the organization.
Thought Leadership & Strategy
We seek a leader with profound knowledge of the entertainment competitive landscape, market dynamics, and our network partners. The Head of Research will leverage data and insights to inform decision-making processes with business leaders, aiming to enhance our market positioning and drive growth.
  • Collaborate with Finance and Corporate Development teams on analyses supporting strategic initiatives, including acquisitions, partnerships, and market forecasting.
  • Drive thought leadership initiatives across SPT, producing insightful publications and whitepapers for internal stakeholders and talent.
  • Maintain an in-depth understanding of SPT's buyers and network partners, including commissioning forecasts and market-wide genre trends.
  • Develop strategic insights regarding buyer strategies and effectively communicate these to creative teams and senior leadership.
Team Leadership & Development

  • Oversee a team of analysts and managers, guiding them in mastering comprehensive methodologies and tools.
  • Facilitate strategic narrative development in addition to data provision.
  • Empower the team and enhance their visibility within the organization.
  • Adopt an open and collaborative approach when partnering with internal data and insight teams across Sony.
Qualifications:
  • 7+ years of experience in leveraging both quantitative and qualitative research, preferably in media.
  • 7+ years of experience in analyzing media consumption data.
  • Proven experience in commissioning, designing, and managing multi-market qualitative and quantitative research projects.
  • Familiarity with syndicated consumer, trend, and audience data tools.
  • Strong aptitude for strategic data storytelling and narrative development.
  • Expert knowledge of the television landscape, including traditional networks and emerging media platforms.
  • Deep understanding of the television production process, from creative strategy to series delivery.
  • Expertise in digital viewership measurement.
  • A genuine passion for film and television.
  • Strong executive presence and strategic mindset.
  • Advocate for the consumer and audience perspective.
  • Collaborative team builder with experience in diverse organizational structures.
  • Exceptional visual and verbal presentation skills, with experience delivering insights at an executive level.

The anticipated base salary for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience. This role may also qualify for additional incentives and comprehensive benefits.
