Position Overview

The Oncology Research Nurse collaborates with the research team to identify clinical trials that can significantly benefit our patient population.

This role involves working alongside other nurse navigators to assess and facilitate potential patients for clinical trials, ensuring eligible candidates are referred to the Research Department. The nurse reviews physician schedules and patient records to pre-screen for inclusion criteria.

Patient Support & Education:

The nurse educates, supports, and assists patients and their families, acting as a vital link to their healthcare providers and support services throughout their research study journey. This position is crucial for implementing multidisciplinary care during the research protocol.

The nurse facilitates and coordinates comprehensive cancer care for new research patients at the Cooper Cancer Institute, serving as a key resource for information and education across all cancer research protocols.

They act as a liaison between new patients, physicians, and diagnostic services to expedite the initiation of research participation. The nurse explains their role to patients and families, addressing questions and directing them to the appropriate specialists.

With a deep understanding of the challenges posed by cancer, the nurse anticipates the needs of patients and families, providing tailored support and education that respects their cultural and spiritual beliefs.

The nurse encourages patient involvement in clinical decision-making while offering emotional and informational support to both patients and their families.

All documentation related to patient care is completed promptly, ensuring continuous communication within the oncology research team.

Utilizing available databases and resources, the nurse ensures that information is accessible and understandable for all team members.

Program Development:

The nurse plays a role in enhancing Research Physician outreach by identifying areas needing attention, overseeing outreach initiatives, and analyzing patient referral patterns.

Collaboration with the Events Coordinator and program physicians is essential for planning and executing Research Community Education Programs.

Multidisciplinary Tumor Board:

Participation in Disease-Specific Tumor Boards is a key responsibility, ensuring that research plans discussed are communicated effectively to patients and the necessary actions are taken. The nurse also relays follow-up plans to the multidisciplinary and clinical research teams.

Active involvement in multidisciplinary rounds and conferences is expected, helping to coordinate and ensure all necessary data is available for the cancer team conference.

Education:

The nurse collaborates with various disciplines to develop, implement, and evaluate oncology research programs for patients, healthcare professionals, and the broader community. Acting as a liaison with external research organizations is also part of this role.

Development of educational resources for cancer patients and families interested in clinical research is essential, as is providing education within the Cooper network and beyond.

Educational programs and lectures for oncology fellows, surgical residents, medical students, and nursing staff are also part of the responsibilities.

Assisting in the onboarding and training of new research staff and other faculty members is expected.

Additional Responsibilities:

Compliance with all organizational and departmental policies and procedures is mandatory, including timely completion of documentation.

Participation in annual mandatory training sessions is required.

The nurse must work efficiently, remain adaptable, and prioritize tasks effectively.

Maintaining active and current professional credentials is essential.

Providing backup support for other research staff during absences is expected, provided the nurse meets the necessary qualifications.

Other duties and special projects may be assigned as needed to ensure the efficient and high-quality operation of the department.

Active participation in the Research Review Committee is also required.

The nurse serves as a liaison and instructor for research staff regarding the utilization of relevant systems.

Experience Required

A minimum of 2 years of nursing experience is required, with a preference for oncology experience.

A minimum of 2 years of research experience is preferred.

Experience in program development is also preferred.

Education Requirements

A Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing is required.
