Position Overview

The Oncology Research Nurse collaborates with the research team to identify clinical trials that may benefit our patient population.

This role involves working alongside other nurse navigators to assess and facilitate potential candidates for clinical trials, directing eligible patients to the Research Department. The nurse reviews physician schedules and patient records to pre-screen for inclusion criteria.

Promoting research-based therapies and education to patients is a key responsibility.

The nurse collaborates with clinical research coordinators to create operational flow plans for each active research protocol.

Patient Support & Education:

The nurse educates, supports, and assists patients and their families, acting as a liaison to their healthcare providers and support services throughout their participation in research studies. This role is crucial for implementing multidisciplinary care during the research protocol.

Facilitating and coordinating comprehensive cancer care for new research patients within the Cooper Cancer Institute is essential. The nurse serves as a vital resource for information and education regarding all cancer research protocols.

As a liaison between new patients, physicians, and diagnostic services, the nurse expedites the initiation of participation in research protocols. They explain the role of the nurse navigator to patients and families, addressing and forwarding inquiries to the appropriate disciplines.

Understanding the challenges and experiences associated with cancer, the nurse anticipates the needs of patients and families. They identify knowledge gaps and provide supportive information and education, respecting the cultural and spiritual beliefs of patients.

The nurse encourages patient involvement in clinical decision-making while offering emotional and informational support to patients and their families.

All related documentation must be completed promptly, ensuring ongoing communication within the oncology research team.

Utilizing available databases and resources in a clear and accessible manner for team members is also required.

Program Development:

The nurse implements outreach initiatives by identifying areas needing attention, overseeing outreach plans, and analyzing patient referrals and program growth.

Collaboration with the Events Coordinator and program physicians is necessary for planning and executing Research Community Education Programs.

Multidisciplinary Tumor Board:

Participation in Disease-Specific Tumor Boards is expected.

The nurse follows up to ensure that the research plan discussed at the tumor board is communicated to the patient and that necessary actions are taken. They also relay the agreed-upon follow-up plan in writing to the multidisciplinary and clinical research teams.

Participation in multidisciplinary rounds and conferences is required, ensuring that all necessary data is available for team discussions.

Education:

The nurse collaborates with all CCI disciplines to develop, implement, and evaluate oncology research programs for patients, healthcare professionals, and the community. Acting as a liaison with external research agencies is also part of the role.

Development of educational resources for cancer patients and families interested in clinical research is essential.

Providing education within the Cooper network and beyond is necessary, including educational programs and lectures for oncology fellows, surgical residents, medical students, and nursing staff.

Assisting with the onboarding and training of new research staff and other CCI faculty is also part of the responsibilities.

Additional Responsibilities:

Compliance with all system and departmental policies and procedures is required, including timely completion of documentation.

Attendance at annual mandatory in-services is expected.

The nurse must work efficiently, remain flexible, and prioritize tasks effectively.

Maintaining active and current professional credentials is essential.

Providing backup support for other research staff during absences, when qualified, is also required.

Performing other duties and functions necessary for the efficient and quality operation of the department is expected.

Participation in the Research Review Committee is also part of the role.

Acting as a liaison and instructor for research staff regarding the utilization of EPIC is required.

Experience Required

A minimum of 2 years of nursing experience is required, with a preference for oncology experience.

A minimum of 2 years of research experience is preferred.

Experience in program development is preferred.

Education Requirements

A Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing is required.
