Short Description

Collaborates with the research team to identify clinical trials that could benefit the patient demographic.

Partners with fellow nurse navigators to evaluate and facilitate potential patients for clinical trials, directing eligible candidates to the Research Department. Reviews physician schedules and patient records to pre-screen for inclusion criteria.

Advocates for research-based therapies and education for patients.

Works alongside clinical research coordinators to create operational flow plans for each active research protocol.

New Patient Support & Education:

Educates, supports, and assists patients and their families, acting as a liaison to their healthcare providers and support services throughout their research study journey. This role is essential in implementing multidisciplinary care during the research protocol.

Facilitates and coordinates multidisciplinary cancer care for new research patients within the Cooper Cancer Institute, serving as a vital resource for information and education regarding all cancer research protocols.

Acts as a liaison between new patients, healthcare providers, and diagnostic services to expedite the initiation of participation in research protocols. Clarifies the role of the nurse navigator to patients and families, triaging inquiries to the appropriate disciplines.

Recognizes the challenges and experiences associated with cancer, anticipating the needs of patients and families. Identifies knowledge gaps and provides supportive information and education, considering the cultural and spiritual beliefs of patients.

Encourages patient involvement and autonomy in clinical decision-making while offering emotional and informational support to patients and their families.

Ensures timely completion of all related documentation; maintains ongoing communication with the oncology research team.

Utilizes available databases and files in a manner that is clear and accessible to other team members.

Program Development:

Implements outreach initiatives for Research Physicians by identifying areas of need, overseeing outreach plans, and analyzing patient referrals and program growth.

Collaborates with the Events Coordinator and program physicians in planning and executing Research Community Education Programs.

Multidisciplinary Tumor Board:

Participates in Disease-Specific Tumor Boards.

Follows up to ensure that the research plan agreed upon at the tumor board is communicated to the patient and that necessary actions are taken. Also documents the agreed-upon research follow-up plan for the multidisciplinary and clinical research teams.

Engages in multidisciplinary rounds and conferences, helping to coordinate and ensure that all necessary data is available for the multidisciplinary cancer team conference.

Education:

Collaborates with all CCI disciplines to develop, implement, participate in, and evaluate oncology research programs for patients, healthcare professionals, and the community. Acts as a liaison with external research organizations.

Creates educational resources for cancer patients and families interested in clinical research.

Provides educational sessions within the Cooper network and externally as needed. Delivers educational programs and lectures for oncology fellows, surgical residents, medical students, and nursing staff.

Assists in onboarding and training new research personnel and other CCI faculty.

Other:

Adheres to all system and departmental policies and procedures, including timely completion of related documentation.

Participates in annual mandatory training sessions.

Demonstrates efficiency, flexibility, and effective prioritization.

Maintains active and current professional credentials.

Provides backup support for other research staff during absences, as qualified by education and credentials.

Performs additional duties and functions necessary for the efficient and quality operation of the department and system.

Engages in all related duties or special projects as assigned.

Contributes as a member of the Research Review Committee.

Acts as a liaison and instructor for research staff regarding the utilization of EPIC.

Experience Required

A minimum of 2 years of nursing experience is required, with a preference for oncology experience.

A minimum of 2 years of research experience is preferred.

Experience in program development is preferred.

Education Requirements

Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.
