Position Title: Radiation Safety Specialist

Department: Arkansas Department of Health

Role Overview: The Radiation Safety Specialist is tasked with overseeing the review and renewal processes for radioactive material licenses, conducting compliance inspections, and engaging in environmental monitoring activities. This role is governed by applicable state and federal regulations as well as agency policies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review license renewal applications for thoroughness and precision; assess applicant eligibility, user qualifications, and safety protocols.
  • Conduct on-site evaluations of facilities utilizing ionizing radiation, ensuring adherence to safety standards.
  • Analyze and assess safety measures by reviewing radiological monitoring systems, radiation surveys, and personnel exposure records.
  • Act as a safety officer by investigating potential employee exposure and misuse of radioactive materials, providing corrective recommendations.
  • Offer technical support to licensees in completing compliance documentation and addressing public inquiries.
  • Notify licensees of any deficiencies identified during inspections.
  • Participate as a member of the Radiological Emergency Response Team, conducting surveys and collecting environmental samples.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Travel Requirements: Frequent in-state travel and occasional out-of-state travel may be necessary. Protective clothing, including respirators, may be required during emergency responses due to potential radiation exposure.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of state and federal regulations regarding nuclear health and safety.
  • Familiarity with nuclear physics principles related to radiation detection and safety standards.
  • Proficiency in using radiological testing equipment and procedures at nuclear facilities.
  • Capability to conduct inspections and document findings effectively.
  • Ability to provide expert guidance on managing radiation hazards and emergency procedures.
  • Skill in operating and calibrating radiation detection instruments.
  • Experience in reviewing Nuclear Regulatory Commission license applications for accuracy.
  • Ability to train inspection teams in nuclear safety protocols.

Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree in chemistry, physics, engineering, or a related discipline is required, along with four years of experience in health compliance review and inspection. Additional relevant education or experience may be considered for meeting these qualifications.

Licensing:

A valid driver's license is mandatory. Additional requirements may be determined by the agency for recruitment purposes.
