Position Overview:
The Arkansas Department of Health is seeking a qualified individual for the role of Health Physicist. This position is essential in ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations regarding radioactive materials and safety protocols.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Review and process applications for radioactive material licenses, ensuring all submissions are complete and accurate.
  • Conduct thorough inspections of facilities utilizing ionizing radiation, assessing safety measures and compliance with established guidelines.
  • Evaluate radiological monitoring systems, radiation surveys, and personnel exposure records to ensure adherence to safety standards.
  • Act as a safety officer, investigating incidents of employee exposure and misuse of radioactive materials, providing recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Offer technical support to licensees in completing compliance documentation and addressing public inquiries regarding radiation safety.
  • Participate as a member of the Radiological Emergency Response Team, conducting environmental surveys and sample collection as necessary.

Travel Requirements:
This role requires frequent in-state travel and occasional out-of-state travel, with potential exposure to radiation hazards. Protective clothing, including respirators, may be necessary during emergency responses.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor's degree in chemistry, physics, engineering, or a related discipline, along with four years of experience in health compliance review and inspection. A valid driver's license is mandatory.

Knowledge and Skills:
The candidate should have a solid understanding of nuclear health and safety regulations, principles of nuclear physics, and the operation of radiation detection equipment. Strong analytical skills for conducting inspections and documenting findings are essential.
