Position Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a dedicated and experienced legal professional for the role of Senior Appellate Attorney. This position is integral to our mission of ensuring the rights and dignity of our clients through effective and compassionate legal representation. The selected attorney will manage cases primarily focused on appeals to the Court of Appeals of Virginia and the Supreme Court of Virginia.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze trial court records to identify viable issues for appeal.
  • Prepare and file comprehensive pleadings in appellate courts on behalf of clients.
  • Draft motions and present oral arguments in appellate proceedings.
  • Maintain regular communication with clients throughout the appellate process, ensuring timely responses to inquiries.
  • Support public defender offices by performing additional duties as required.

Compensation

The salary for the Senior Appellate Attorney role is set at $97,306.00, accompanied by state benefits. This position primarily allows for telework, with occasional requirements for in-office presence.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and admission to the Virginia State Bar are mandatory.
  • A strong commitment to the mission of the Commonwealth and the advocacy for our clients.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient legal research capabilities.
  • Thorough understanding of criminal law.
  • Ability to accept constructive feedback and adapt accordingly.
  • Strong organizational skills with the capacity to manage multiple deadlines.

Additional Requirements for Senior Appellate Attorney

  • In-depth knowledge of appellate procedures.
  • A minimum of four years of relevant legal experience, including criminal defense and appellate representation.
  • Experience in mentoring and providing feedback to peers.
  • Willingness to develop resources and conduct training sessions.

Travel Requirements

A valid driver's license and the ability to travel as necessary for court appearances and client meetings are essential.
