Position Overview
The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a dedicated and experienced legal professional for the role of Senior Appellate Attorney. This position is integral to our mission of safeguarding the rights and dignity of our clients through exceptional legal representation. The attorney will be responsible for managing public defense cases for both adults and juveniles, focusing primarily on appeals to the Court of Appeals of Virginia and the Supreme Court of Virginia.
Key Responsibilities
- Reviewing trial court records to identify potential issues for appeal.
- Drafting and filing high-quality legal documents in appellate courts.
- Conducting oral arguments in appellate proceedings.
- Maintaining effective communication with clients throughout the appeals process.
- Responding promptly to client correspondence.
- Adhering to all policies and procedures established by the Indigent Defense Commission.
- Assisting with additional duties as required to support public defender offices.
Compensation
The salary for the Senior Appellate Attorney position is $97,306.00, in addition to state benefits. The role allows for primarily teleworking, with some expectations for physical presence at nearby public defender offices.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and admission to the Virginia State Bar.
- A strong commitment to the mission of the Indigent Defense Commission.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Proficient legal research abilities.
- In-depth knowledge of criminal law.
- Capacity to accept and incorporate feedback effectively.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
Additional Requirements for Senior Appellate Attorney
- Experience in appellate procedure.
- A minimum of four years of legal practice, including two years in criminal defense and two years in appellate representation.
- Ability to mentor junior attorneys and contribute to the development of appellate resources.
