Position Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is actively seeking a highly skilled Senior Appellate Attorney to join our dedicated team within the Indigent Defense Commission (IDC). This role is pivotal in upholding the rights and dignity of our clients through exceptional legal representation. The attorney will primarily focus on handling appellate cases for both adult and juvenile clients, representing them before the Court of Appeals of Virginia and the Supreme Court of Virginia.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze trial court records to identify viable issues for appeal.
  • Prepare and file comprehensive pleadings in appellate courts on behalf of clients.
  • Draft motions and present oral arguments effectively in appellate proceedings.
  • Maintain consistent communication with clients throughout the appeal process, ensuring timely responses to inquiries.
  • Adhere to all IDC policies, procedures, and court regulations.
  • Engage in additional duties as assigned to support the broader objectives of public defense.

Compensation

The salary for the Senior Appellate Attorney position is set at $97,306.00, complemented by state benefits. The role allows for primarily teleworking arrangements, with occasional requirements for physical presence at a local public defender office.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and be admitted to the Virginia State Bar.
  • A strong commitment to the mission of the IDC and advocacy for clients.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient legal research capabilities.
  • Solid understanding of criminal law and appellate procedures.
  • Ability to manage feedback constructively and meet deadlines efficiently.
  • Strong organizational skills with the capacity to prioritize multiple tasks.

Additional Requirements for Assistant Public Defender II

  • Minimum of two years of experience in appellate court representation or relevant legal experience.

Additional Requirements for Senior Appellate Attorney

  • At least four years of experience in criminal defense, including two years in appellate representation.
  • Capability to mentor and provide feedback to peers regarding appellate issues.
  • Willingness to develop training resources for fellow attorneys.

Travel Requirements

A valid driver's license is necessary, as travel throughout the Commonwealth for court appearances and meetings is expected.
