Oakland, California, United States Block Full time
Job Overview

Company Overview:
Block is a unified organization composed of various teams, all driven by a shared mission of economic empowerment. Our foundational teams — including People, Finance, Legal, Hardware, Information Security, and Platform Infrastructure Engineering — provide essential support and guidance at the corporate level. These teams collaborate across business units and geographical boundaries, working across different time zones and disciplines to create inclusive policies, forecast financial trends, offer legal advice, protect systems, and nurture innovative initiatives. Every challenge presents an opportunity, and we value diverse perspectives to uncover them. Join us at Block.

Role Description:

The Security division safeguards Block while enabling the organization to take calculated risks. Our focus is on amplifying our impact, which involves establishing the Program Management Organization (PMO) to support security functions and initiatives. This includes developing the necessary processes and frameworks for our teams and tools to scale effectively, as well as managing intricate projects as required.

As Block expands, a systematic and organized approach to scaling will be crucial for our sustained success. We are seeking a Technical Program Manager to join our Security PMO and assist in addressing the challenges related to identifying and managing security risks throughout the organization.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee large-scale security initiatives across Block, with a specific emphasis on Data Security.
  • Manage multiple complex projects, often with competing timelines and resource demands.
  • Foster diverse relationships with Product, Engineering, Operations, Compliance, Legal, and Analytics teams at Block, providing recommendations and solutions that help teams achieve their objectives.
  • Enhance existing internal partnerships: define, iterate, and implement new programs that mitigate security risks across the organization.
  • Develop and refine lightweight tracking and reporting tools to enhance accountability and lessen the operational burden on engineering teams.
  • Engage in quarterly and annual planning for the Security PMO.
Qualifications:

Required:

  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or a related field, along with 5 or more years of project management experience.
  • Exceptional leadership and communication skills, with a proven ability to motivate team members, stakeholders, and engineering clients.
  • A technical background with an understanding of SDLC, Data Security, and Privacy.
  • Experience collaborating directly with engineering and cross-functional teams to identify, scope, and deliver multiple complex projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to interpret and convey technical requirements to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • A history of identifying and implementing engineering-focused operational enhancements with measurable outcomes.

Preferred:

  • Programming experience for writing production code and/or experience managing engineering teams.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies.
  • Experience utilizing scripting and/or AI/Automation for scaling and optimization.
  • Experience in customizing PMO standards and processes for engineering teams.
Additional Information:

Block adopts a market-based approach to compensation, which may vary based on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into zones based on a labor cost index for that area. The starting salary for the successful candidate will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions.

Full-time employee benefits include:

  • Healthcare coverage (Medical, Vision, and Dental insurance)
  • Health Savings Account and Flexible Spending Account
  • Retirement Plans with company matching
  • Employee Stock Purchase Program
  • Wellness programs, including access to mental health resources, financial planning, and a monthly wellness allowance
  • Paid parental and caregiving leave
  • Paid time off (including 12 paid holidays)
  • Paid sick leave
  • Learning and Development resources
  • Paid Life insurance, AD&D, and disability benefits

These benefits are further detailed in Block's policies. This role is also eligible to participate in Block's equity plan, subject to the terms of the applicable plans and policies. We are committed to building a more inclusive economy where our customers have equal access to opportunities, and we strive to uphold these values in our workplace. Block is an equal opportunity employer.
