Position Overview:

Applied Research Associates (ARA) is on the lookout for a Senior Engineer/Researcher specializing in unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) systems to enhance the U.S. Navy's UUV modeling, simulation, and testing initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess a profound knowledge of UUV systems, including both remotely operated and autonomous vehicles, as well as expertise in machine learning and artificial intelligence, to spearhead a research team dedicated to advancing current UUV capabilities and exploring innovative solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team on UUV designs, architectures, testing, and development.

Essential Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in engineering or a related discipline, accompanied by 8-10 years of experience in unmanned underwater vehicle systems.
  • U.S. Citizenship with the capability to secure a DoD Secret security clearance.
  • In-depth understanding of UUV operations, encompassing mechanical, electrical, hardware, software, sensors, and controls.
  • Proficient in UUV design, modification, testing, data analysis, troubleshooting, and operational procedures.
  • Experience in underwater data collection utilizing custom or third-party sensor systems.
  • Proven track record in developing and executing UUV tests and evaluations aimed at model and simulation development or validation.
  • Skilled in preparing research documentation, technical proposals, and formal presentations, as well as interpreting data.
  • Competence in using the MS Office Suite.
  • Ability to function independently or as part of a diverse team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with U.S. Navy UUVs or analogous systems.
  • Familiarity with the Naval Autonomy Test System (NATS), NATS Integrated Management System (NIMS), and/or Virtual Maritime Autonomy Test Environment (VMATE).
  • Background in developing or utilizing Tactical Awareness Kit (TAK) applications.
  • Experience in testing for digital twin environments.
  • Ability to survey underwater environments and gather relevant data for testing purposes.
  • Possession of an active DoD Secret security clearance.
