Lead Engineer for Underwater Vehicle Simulation

Position Overview:

Applied Research Associates (ARA) is in search of a Senior Modeling and Simulation Engineer with extensive knowledge in the physics of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) to enhance U.S. Navy's modeling, simulation, and testing initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess a profound comprehension of UUV systems, including both remotely operated and autonomous vehicles.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and conduct modeling and simulation tasks, encompassing analysis, simulation development, and both verification and validation processes.

Essential Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, or a related discipline, accompanied by 8-10 years of relevant experience in UUV physics.
  • U.S. Citizenship and eligibility to obtain a DoD Secret security clearance.
  • Proven experience in physics-based engineering modeling and simulation.
  • Expertise in implementing third-party UUV physics modeling and simulations grounded in theoretical and empirical data.
  • Experience in developing and executing real-time, high-fidelity physics models for UUVs.
  • Ability to verify and validate UUV physics modeling and simulations against physical test data.
  • Knowledge of underwater environments and their influence on UUV operations and simulations.
  • Competence in preparing research documentation, technical proposals, formal presentations, and data interpretation.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and programming languages such as Python, C++, and Fortran.
  • Demonstrated capability to work autonomously or collaboratively within a diverse team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with U.S. Navy UUVs or comparable systems.
  • Familiarity with the Naval Autonomy Test System (NATS), NATS Integrated Management System (NIMS), and/or Virtual Maritime Autonomy Test Environment (VMATE).
  • Experience in developing or utilizing Tactical Awareness Kit (TAK) applications.
  • Background in creating and testing digital twin environments.
  • Experience in surveying underwater environments and gathering data for testing purposes.
  • Active DoD Secret security clearance.
