Lead Engineer for Underwater Vehicle Simulation

Position Overview:

Applied Research Associates (ARA) is on the lookout for a Senior Modeling and Simulation Engineer specializing in the physics of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) to bolster our efforts in modeling, simulation, and testing for the U.S. Navy. We seek a candidate with extensive knowledge of UUV systems, including both remotely operated and autonomous vehicles.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and conduct modeling and simulation initiatives, focusing on analysis, development, verification, and validation.

Essential Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, or a related discipline, coupled with 8-10 years of experience in UUV physics.
  • U.S. Citizenship with the capability to secure a DoD Secret security clearance.
  • Demonstrated experience in physics-based engineering modeling and simulation.
  • Proficiency in implementing third-party UUV physics models and simulations grounded in theoretical and empirical data.
  • Experience in creating and deploying real-time, high-fidelity physics models for UUVs.
  • Ability to verify and validate UUV physics models and simulations against empirical test data.
  • Expertise in modeling underwater environments and understanding factors influencing UUV operations.
  • Competence in preparing research documentation, technical proposals, and formal presentations, as well as interpreting data.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and programming languages such as Python, C++, and Fortran.
  • Proven ability to work autonomously or collaboratively within a diverse team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with U.S. Navy UUVs or comparable systems.
  • Familiarity with the Naval Autonomy Test System (NATS), NATS Integrated Management System (NIMS), and/or Virtual Maritime Autonomy Test Environment (VMATE).
  • Experience in developing or utilizing Tactical Awareness Kit (TAK) applications.
  • Background in developing and testing digital twin environments.
  • Skills in surveying underwater environments and gathering relevant data for testing purposes.
  • Active DoD Secret security clearance.
