Job Overview

The Social Science Branch at CSS, Inc. is dedicated to conducting applied research focused on the economic and sociocultural aspects of commercial and recreational fisheries, as well as marine ecosystems. Our mission is to enhance the benefits derived from the nation's renewable marine resources while deepening our understanding of underrepresented communities. This role will contribute to the Branch's efforts and requires a comprehensive understanding of the interactions between human populations and coastal environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in social science evaluations regarding shifts in economic benefits and costs stemming from changes in ecosystem conditions and management practices.
  • Conduct cost-benefit analyses and assess social impacts of proposed management strategies, including bycatch, fisheries capacity, protected species, habitat conservation, and renewable energy initiatives.
  • Evaluate the trade-offs associated with various policy alternatives.
  • Analyze the implications of allocation decisions between commercial and recreational sectors, as well as within specific sectors.
  • Perform economic and social assessments to characterize the implications of fishery allocation choices.
  • Identify suitable social science metrics and research methodologies for estimating performance indicators.
  • Develop and apply descriptive statistics to evaluate the economic and social outcomes of catch share and non-catch share programs.
  • Support and conduct assessments to evaluate the performance of catch share fisheries.
  • Utilize community and census data to construct detailed profiles of fishing communities, incorporating demographic, economic, and fishery-related information.
  • Contribute to the oral history database by conducting interviews and transcribing oral histories.
  • Provide guidance and support for individuals undertaking oral history initiatives.
  • Investigate the social and economic repercussions of management actions and environmental disasters on fishing communities.
  • Engage in fieldwork, including surveys of local fishing infrastructure and archival research.
  • Conduct qualitative interviews and analyze data from open-ended responses.
  • Assess the vulnerability and resilience of fishing communities, maintaining metrics related to coastal community resilience.
  • Research the connections between seafood supply chains, markets, distribution systems, and nutrition policies, and their effects on regional fisheries.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in social science, sociology, economics, or a related discipline is required; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • At least 2 years of relevant professional experience post-degree.
  • Proven expertise in survey design and scientific sampling methodologies.
  • Training and/or experience in statistical analysis.
  • Familiarity with statistical software such as SPSS, R, or JMP.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with excellent organizational abilities and attention to detail.
  • Experience with state or federal agencies is highly desirable.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary for surveys and conferences (approximately 10-15% travel).
  • Ability to pass a National Agency Check (NACI) and maintain it throughout employment.
