Position Overview

We are in search of a skilled and knowledgeable GIS Analyst to provide support to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), specifically NOAA Fisheries, the Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC), and the Social Sciences Branch (SSB).

Key Responsibilities:

  • GIS Analysis and Support: Conduct GIS analyses and coordinate efforts related to marine resources and human activities. Generate maps and datasets that serve as effective communication tools for stakeholders in fishery management, research, and governmental bodies.
  • Tool and Application Development: Create web-based applications to enhance the communication and distribution of GIS data and analyses. Streamline and automate regular GIS analyses to boost productivity. Develop tools that allow stakeholders to access and process anonymized GIS data.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Prepare documentation including metadata, technical documents, reference materials, and comprehensive reports. Compile a final report summarizing data collection and development efforts, along with monthly progress updates.
  • Data Analysis: Perform time series and geospatial analyses to assess community reliance on fisheries. Organize and facilitate access to spatial resources for stakeholders and collaborators.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Master's degree or equivalent experience in Geography, Fisheries Science, Marine Biology, Marine Policy, Environmental Science, Social Science, or related disciplines.
  • Proven experience with ArcView or similar GIS software.
  • Expertise in data analysis and the design, development, and management of relational databases for scientific data.
  • Advanced proficiency in programming languages such as R and/or Python.
  • Demonstrated project management skills for complex scientific programs.
  • Excellent communication abilities, capable of conveying intricate information to diverse audiences through written and visual formats.
  • Strong independent work ethic with effective time management skills.
  • Flexibility to adapt to shifting priorities and tight deadlines.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Experience with NOAA NMFS or similar governmental organizations is advantageous.
  • Advanced GIS capabilities, particularly in cartographic design and high-quality map production, are preferred.
  • Experience in analyzing socioeconomic data, particularly in environmental policy contexts, is a plus.
