We are in search of a skilled and knowledgeable Fisheries Economist to assist the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), specifically within NOAA Fisheries, the Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC), and the Social Sciences Branch (SSB).

Key Responsibilities:

The Fisheries Economist will engage in economic and sociocultural analysis to evaluate the extent and distribution of benefits and costs related to the management of living marine resources.

Specific duties include:

  • Conducting a thorough review of existing literature to identify suitable methodologies and formulating research inquiries that align with NOAA's stewardship objectives.
  • Integrating current economic models of fisheries into combined bio-economic frameworks.
  • Developing and econometrically calibrating sub-models to improve the accuracy of these bio-economic frameworks.
  • Contributing to NOAA's modeling initiatives by enhancing software tools and participating in team discussions. Attending SSB council meetings to grasp management requirements.
  • Collaborating with the scientific community through the Social Science Branch and other organizational gatherings. Disseminating research outcomes through technical documentation and presentations at scientific forums.

Essential Qualifications and Skills:

  • Ph.D. in Fisheries, Environmental and Natural Resource Economics, Applied Economics, Applied Social Science, or a related discipline, or a Master's degree accompanied by relevant professional experience. Ph.D. candidates anticipating graduation can also apply.
  • Proven experience in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team setting to deliver comprehensive research and findings.
  • Expertise in formulating research inquiries and executing quantitative analyses to derive solutions.
  • Proficiency in R programming and familiarity with Git or similar version control systems.
  • Understanding of fisheries or natural resource management principles.
  • Experience with Unix operating systems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with a track record of publishing scientific research and presenting to varied audiences.
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing priorities while maintaining attention to detail.
