Position Overview

Role: GIS Analyst for NOAA Fisheries

This role is essential for providing geospatial support to the Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) and the Social Sciences Branch (SSB) under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Geospatial Analysis: Conduct comprehensive GIS analyses to support marine resource management and human usage studies. Create informative maps and datasets for public dissemination and collaboration with fishery management and research entities.
  • Application Development: Design and implement web-based tools to enhance the accessibility and sharing of GIS data. Streamline and automate routine GIS tasks to boost operational efficiency.
  • Documentation: Prepare thorough documentation including metadata, technical reports, and reference materials. Compile a final report summarizing the methodologies and findings.
  • Data Evaluation: Perform time series and spatial analyses to assess community reliance on fisheries. Facilitate access to geospatial resources for stakeholders.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Geography, Fisheries Science, Marine Biology, Environmental Science, or related disciplines.
  • Proven experience with GIS software such as ArcView.
  • Strong background in data analysis and database management for scientific applications.
  • Proficiency in programming languages like R and/or Python.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of presenting complex information clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work autonomously while managing time effectively.
  • Flexibility to adapt to shifting priorities and deadlines.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with NOAA NMFS or similar governmental organizations.
  • Advanced GIS capabilities, especially in cartographic design.
  • Background in analyzing socioeconomic data within environmental policy frameworks.
