We are looking for a skilled and enthusiastic Research Specialist to assist the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), specifically within NOAA Fisheries, the Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC), and the Social Sciences Branch (SSB).

Key Responsibilities:

The Research Specialist will play a crucial role in data gathering, analysis, and the management of research initiatives within the Social Science Branch. This role entails conducting comprehensive social and economic evaluations through the collection of data from fishing sectors and relevant stakeholders. Additionally, the Research Specialist will be responsible for documenting oral histories and managing the associated recordings.

Specific Duties Include:

  • Data Gathering & Analysis: Execute data collection through observations, surveys, and interviews in accordance with SSB protocols. Organize and oversee survey data utilizing tools such as SPSS, Stata, and others. Maintain thorough documentation of all fieldwork using shared digital platforms.
  • Survey Design & Oversight: Assist in the development of surveys for SSB research initiatives. Collaborate with NMFS personnel to prepare necessary materials for approvals. Coordinate the survey data collection team by conducting interviews with commercial fishing crews and sampling active fishing locations.
  • Oral History Documentation: Carry out oral history projects following the best practices outlined by the Oral History Association. Ensure high-quality audio recordings that meet the standards for Library of Congress archives. Interview narrators to gather in-depth insights related to community resilience and climate impacts. Transcribe oral histories in accordance with established guidelines and utilize coding software such as MaxQDA. Secure release forms to facilitate public access to oral histories through archival channels.

Qualifications and Skills Required:

  • Master's degree in Fisheries Science, Marine Biology, Marine Policy, Environmental Science, Social Science, or a related discipline.
  • Proficient knowledge and experience in statistical sampling methodologies for social science surveys.
  • Experience in designing surveys and the ability to implement them across various formats (mail, telephone, web-based, personal interviews).
  • Demonstrated experience in managing complex scientific programs.
  • Extensive background in conducting oral histories and statistical analysis of survey data.
  • Proficiency in data analysis software such as SPSS, Stata, and similar tools.
  • Experience in managing survey data, including data cleaning, documentation, and storage.
  • Strong organizational abilities to oversee fieldwork, document activities, and maintain precise records.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the capability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Adaptability to shifting priorities and strict deadlines.
  • Prior experience with NOAA systems or protocols is advantageous.
