Position Overview

Role: GIS Analyst for NOAA Fisheries

This role is focused on providing essential GIS support to enhance marine resource management and human use analysis. The selected candidate will contribute to the Northeast Fisheries Science Center and the Social Sciences Branch program under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Key Responsibilities:
  • GIS Analysis and Support: Conduct comprehensive GIS analyses and coordinate efforts related to marine resources and human interactions. Create informative maps and datasets for public communication and collaboration with fishery management and research entities.
  • Tool and Application Development: Design and implement web-based applications to streamline the sharing of GIS data and analyses. Automate recurring GIS tasks to boost operational efficiency and develop tools for stakeholders to access anonymized GIS data.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Prepare detailed documentation, including metadata and technical reports. Summarize data collection processes and provide regular progress updates.
  • Data Analysis: Perform geospatial and time series analyses to assess community reliance on fisheries, ensuring stakeholders have access to vital spatial resources.
Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Geography, Fisheries Science, Marine Biology, Marine Policy, Environmental Science, or related disciplines.
  • Proven experience with GIS software such as ArcView.
  • Strong background in data analysis and management of relational databases.
  • Proficiency in programming languages, particularly R and/or Python.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively convey complex information to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work autonomously with effective time management.
  • Flexibility to adapt to shifting priorities and tight deadlines.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
Preferred Skills:
  • Experience with NOAA NMFS or similar governmental organizations.
  • Advanced GIS capabilities, especially in cartographic design.
  • Background in analyzing socioeconomic data within environmental policy frameworks.
