Job Overview

The Social Science Branch at CSS, Inc. focuses on applied economic and sociocultural research related to the management and utilization of marine resources, including both commercial and recreational fisheries. Our mission is to enhance the benefits derived from the nation's renewable marine resources while deepening our understanding of diverse communities impacted by these resources.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct social science evaluations to assess the economic impacts and distribution of benefits and costs arising from ecosystem changes and management practices.
  • Perform cost-benefit analyses and social impact assessments concerning management alternatives, bycatch and discard challenges, and habitat protection measures.
  • Evaluate the trade-offs associated with various policy decisions.
  • Analyze the implications of allocation strategies between commercial and recreational sectors.
  • Carry out economic and social assessments to inform fishery allocation choices.
  • Identify suitable social science metrics and research methodologies for performance indicators.
  • Develop and apply statistical methods to evaluate the economic and social outcomes of catch share programs.
  • Support research initiatives aimed at understanding the performance of quota-managed fisheries.
  • Utilize community and census data to create comprehensive profiles of fishing communities, incorporating demographic and economic insights.
  • Assist in the maintenance of an oral history database through interviews and transcription efforts.
  • Provide guidance and training for individuals involved in oral history projects.
  • Investigate the social and economic ramifications of management decisions and environmental disasters on fishing communities.
  • Engage in fieldwork, including surveys of local fishing infrastructure and archival research.
  • Conduct qualitative interviews and analyze data from open-ended discussions.
  • Assess the vulnerability and resilience of fishing communities, maintaining relevant metrics.
  • Support research on the interplay between seafood networks, market dynamics, and nutrition policies, and their effects on regional fisheries.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in social science, sociology, economics, or a related discipline is required; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience post-degree.
  • Proven expertise in survey design and scientific sampling methodologies.
  • Experience in statistical analysis and familiarity with statistical software such as SPSS, R, or JMP.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with excellent organizational abilities and attention to detail.
  • Experience working with state or federal agencies is highly desirable.
  • Willingness to travel for fieldwork and professional development opportunities.
  • Ability to pass a National Agency Check (NACI) and maintain compliance throughout employment.
