Job Summary

The City of Kirkland is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Youth Program Coordinator to lead our Teen/Tween Program. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for planning and implementing outdoor adventures for teens and tweens, promoting physical activity, social interaction, and overall well-being within our community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Youth Engagement: Develop and implement recreational programs and activities that cater to the interests and preferences of teenagers, ensuring their engagement and participation.
  • Mentorship: Serve as a positive role model and mentor, providing guidance and support for teenagers as they develop life skills and social abilities.
  • Conflict Resolution: Handle conflicts and disagreements among teenagers, promoting effective communication and conflict resolution techniques.
  • DEIB Focused: Integrate diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging values into all aspects of Teen Programs, ensuring a welcoming and inclusive environment for all participants.
  • Cultural Competency: Demonstrate an understanding of the experiences and community issues affecting marginalized groups, such as BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities, and work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Youth Development: Plan and facilitate activities that foster personal growth, leadership skills, and self-esteem among teenagers, maintaining a balance between autonomy and safety.
  • Safety Education: Educate teenagers about the importance of safety in recreational activities, including the use of protective gear, and mitigate risks in the field.
  • Open Communication: Encourage and model open and honest communication to build trust and rapport with teenagers, allowing them to express their thoughts and concerns.
  • Supervision: Supervise and mentor 2-3 Teen/Tween Program Instructor II's and 2-3 Recreation Teen Program Interns.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with the team to enhance teenagers' recreational experiences and expand opportunities.
  • Evaluation and Feedback: Regularly assess the effectiveness of programs and gather feedback from teenagers and coworkers to make improvements.
Requirements
  • Good Communication Skills: Possess excellent verbal, written, and telephone communication skills.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Problem-Solving: Demonstrate good judgment in problem-solving and responding to customer needs.
  • Computer Skills: Proficiency in standard computer software, such as Microsoft Office Suite applications Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Qualifications
  • Age: Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Driving Experience: Must have at least 5 years of driving experience and be willing to get certified to drive a 14-passenger minibus (training will be provided upon hire).
  • Experience Working with Teens: At least two years of experience working with teens and/or tweens.
  • Leadership Experience: Minimum one-year experience leading others.
  • Outdoor Experience: Previous experience working in outdoor settings.
  • Knowledge of Hiking Etiquette: Knowledge of general hiking etiquette, LNT, and traversing the outdoors safely.
  • Background Check: Must successfully complete a thorough background check as required by the Child/Adult Abuse Information Act.
  • Driving Abstract: Successful completion of a Washington State Driving Abstract.
