Position Overview:

Role Summary

The City of Roanoke is in search of a Family Support Specialist to engage with the Childcare division. The ideal candidate will manage a caseload focused on child care, ensuring that families are actively involved in employment, educational pursuits, and job search activities while their children benefit from high-quality, age-appropriate child care services. Key responsibilities include but are not limited to: Assessing the needs of clients for child care services, understanding intricate program requirements that differ based on family needs, provider types, child care hours, and funding categories. The role also involves managing electronic case files, collaborating closely with child care vendors to guarantee that services align with family requirements. Additionally, this position will participate in a 24-hour on-call rotation to support Child/Adult Protective Services Hot Line. A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in human services or a related field is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A valid driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is also necessary. Bilingual candidates, particularly Spanish/English speakers, are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

PRIMARY DUTIES
Assists and supports agency clients with personal, social, health, and economic challenges.

CORE FUNCTIONS include the following. Additional duties may be assigned.

- Conducts client interviews to evaluate the nature and extent of their needs.
- Identifies issues, provides counseling, and collaborates with supervisors to prepare social assessments for service planning.
- Maintains comprehensive records throughout the client's engagement with the agency.
- Refers clients to external agencies for services such as clinics, employment assistance, and vocational rehabilitation.
- Engages with agencies including juvenile and domestic relations courts, circuit courts, etc.
- Provides care and protection for abandoned, abused, and neglected children and adults in both routine and emergency situations.
- Works with families facing abuse or neglect to facilitate positive changes, typically within a home environment.
- Makes critical decisions regarding the safety of children and recommendations for institutional care for both children and adults.
- Evaluates homes for day care, foster care, or adoption placements.
- Maintains case documentation and prepares detailed reports of services rendered, findings, and actions taken.
- Represents the agency on various multidisciplinary teams.
- Participates in a 24-hour on-call rotation.

SUPERVISORY ROLE
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a Human Services field or a Bachelor's degree in any discipline with at least two years of relevant experience in Human Services.

Additional Information

LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY
Ability to read and interpret documents such as laws, policies, regulations, safety guidelines, and procedural manuals. Capable of responding effectively to inquiries both orally and in writing. Proficient in presenting information and addressing questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

REASONING SKILLS
Ability to identify problems, gather data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Capable of interpreting various instructions and managing multiple abstract and concrete variables.

***CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS***
Must possess a valid driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. If you do not have a driver's license from Virginia, you must provide a certified copy of your driving record from your previous state of residence with your application.

Must be available to work outside of standard hours and respond to both routine and emergency situations.
