Role Summary
The City of Roanoke is in search of a dedicated Family Services Specialist to join the Childcare division. The ideal candidate will manage a caseload focused on child care, ensuring that families engage in employment, educational pursuits, and job search activities while their children receive quality, age-appropriate care. Key responsibilities include: Assessing client needs for child care services, understanding intricate program requirements tailored to family needs, types and locations of providers, and funding categories. Additionally, the role involves managing electronic case files, collaborating closely with child care vendors to guarantee that services meet family expectations. This position also requires participation in a 24-hour on-call rotation to support Child/Adult Protective Services Hot Line. A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in human services or a related field is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Key Responsibilities
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
Assist and support clients in addressing personal, social, health, and economic challenges.
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to:
- Conducting client interviews to evaluate their needs
- Identifying issues, providing counseling, and collaborating with supervisors to develop service plans
- Maintaining comprehensive records throughout the client relationship
- Referring clients to relevant agencies, such as clinics and employment services
- Engaging with various agencies, including juvenile and domestic relations courts
- Offering protection and care to vulnerable children and adults in emergency situations
- Working with families facing challenges to facilitate positive changes
- Making critical decisions regarding the safety of children and adults
- Assessing homes for child care, foster care, and adoption placements
- Documenting case records and preparing detailed reports
- Representing the agency on multidisciplinary teams
- Participating in a 24-hour on-call rotation

SUPERVISORY ROLE
This position does not include supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a Human Services field or a Bachelor's degree in any discipline accompanied by at least two years of relevant experience in Human Services.

Proficiency in reading and interpreting documents such as laws, policies, and regulations. Ability to respond effectively to inquiries both orally and in writing. Capable of presenting information and addressing questions from diverse groups.
REASONING ABILITY

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must possess a valid driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. If not, a certified copy of the driving record from the previous state of residence must be submitted with the application.
